Hello! So, here's the story... Interviewed a few weeks ago and was recommended for a position by the principal. I've never interviewed for a larger district before and I'm extremely excited to finally get my foot in the door. Principal said that HR will contact me for the official offer, which has been a couple of weeks now -- haven't heard from HR. Is this typical? Should I call HR just to check the status? Just getting anxious because another school called me today from the same district asking for an interview, but told that principal my situation. She pretty much just said that if I was recommended, it's a good sign... I'm probably just being anxious, but it would be nice to hear if anyone has gone through the same dilemma and how it turned out.
I would definitely call HR and just see where they are in the process. If you don't get a response from them, call your principal and see if he can help!
Have any of you heard of having a principal recommend two candidates for the same position and then having HR decide? All the P said was that she is pushing me and another candidate for an intermediate position. The other candidate is internal, so it would seem obvious that HR would pick him/her.
Not necessarily. The internal candidate probably is higher on the salary scale, so a new hire may get the nod. On the other hand, unless HR found something in references, fingerprint results, or criminal history, what Principal would leave the choice up to someone else? I think that HR's job is not to choose, but to vet the candidates. But I could be wrong.
Thank you all so much for your feedback! I went ahead and called HR this morning. The rep said that she had not seen my name be recommended and that the position had been filled. I'm not sure what to think of this.
Oof. So sorry to hear that. Can you contact the principal who offered you the interview yesterday and try to get scheduled in? I would also contact the original principal to get some clarification of what had happened.
That's terrible! Definitely call the principal who offered you an interview yesterday, and get in there right away!
Didn't you say the Principal told you they were pushing for you and another internal candidate? I can't see a principal telling HR "I'm recommending A and B for hire so you guys pick one" around here I believe the principal says I want this person and only one at a time and if background checks and certifications and paperwork is A okay you're hired. They might say "Okay so we interviewed A, B, C, D. We're recommended C for hire #1 and A, D and B in that order just in case C has some background skeleton so A as runner up will get a you've been recommended call"
Definitely call the school that called for an interview and see if you can still schedule one. If it were me, I'd also contact the principal who offered you the position and ask what happened. You may not get a straight answer, but if it were me I'd at least have to try to figure it out.
Yes! Exactly! I mean that would be the "typical" hiring process you would think. I keep replaying the conversation through my head, and the principal does say that they have pushed through to recommend me and that HR will contact me. I left the P a message. I guess we'll find out. This whole scenario is just so weird. Unfortunately, I could not be squeezed in for an interview for the other position. You live and you learn. I appreciate all your thoughts!
That's a gut-punch. I couldn't imagine why that would have happened, unless something turned up on your background check.
I'm curious if you ever got ahold of that principal and how this all turned out! This was a big concern for me when I was waiting to hear from HR (they had to wait for the position to close) but mine worked out. That's scary that they would tell you that you got it and then have it fall through
I emailed the principal and they called me back instead of emailing back, which was nice. The P explained that they were new to the district and didn't fully understand the hiring procedure. Basically I was the number two choice. I wish they would have just explained that from the beginning instead of making the process confusing and bringing hopes up. It is scary and I was a bit angry at myself that I missed out on another opportunity because of miscommunication. But I guess the lesson learned here was to just take every conversation during the job process with grain of salt until that contract is signed.
The district needs to get the P up to speed on the hiring process. If you're the top person aka the principal at a school representing the district out of everything you should be well versed in how the hiring process works. Otherwise they should hire for them if they're confused. That's really bad IMO.
