I started a thread where we can all describe how our subbing day went. It's not just to vent, but say anything we want. (I don't see the thread around anymore, but I've started another)!

I've been busy ever since we returned from Thanksgiving break & this coming wk before Christmas break will be busy too. I've been a sub at this one dist for quite a while, but hv still never been to ALL the schools. It's a big dist. Well, yesterday, I went to one I've nev been to & I run into an old high school pal. She's been a 1st gr teacher for the past 3 yrs there. (We graduated in HS in '93). It was nice to see her.

Hello Mrs. I how are you this afternoon?

Well I have not been subbing yet, I am waiting for my fingerprints clearance to go through. The school will resume on 1/12/09, so I should be subbing sometime that week or the next. We'll see. I signed up to sub in two districts, grades K-8 and I am just besides myself with excitement!:thumb: I am especially thrilled to be subbing for PE as I personally love the subject matter.

One of the districts has a SDC for Preschool-8th grade, and I will be working with a paraprofessional. I hope to learn a lot from subbing in these classes. I know the kids are such a delight!

Thanks for starting this thread up again Mrs. I.:)

On Friday I subbed fourth grade resource. I like this group of kids, it was a great day. There is one in there who shuts down every time a sub is in the room and even on a regular basis for the regular teacher. He seems to like to try to rattle you - but I decided on Friday to simply ignore him, he started making noises to upset the other students so I came up behind him, put my arm around him and said quietly into his ear "J*** - I can see that you are not interested in working with us today. Only you can make that decision. What I am requiring of you is to sit quietly so the others CAN work since they want to. If you can not help me with this, I can ask Mr. H*** (principal) to come escort you to his office instead. It is purely your choice." Didn't hear a peep out of him after that and by the end of the period, he was working too...

I so LOVE the little victories! :D

Last Thursday I subbed for a 5th grade class with learning disabilities. There were only 6 kids in the class (and 2 aides). It was such an easy day: I never had to raise my voice to be heard, we worked in a little group so I could sit down most of the time, I had an extra hour of free time right before lunch while they had PE (so I could study), and the kids were so bright and cooperative that we got everything done on our lesson plan with time for a Magic School Bus video at the end of the day!
What a dream job it would be to be the regular teacher in this class!

Today I was blessed with the opportunity to be a hero. Mind you, in a million years I never thought that covering P.E. would make everyone think I am so grand, LOL! What happened was that I was supposed to sub fourth grade today - the teacher booked two subs... she booked the other sub in September but forgot. So I went to the office to see if I was needed anywhere - sure enough, they needed a PE sub in the other building.

On the way over, I realized that since that school starts earlier, one class already missed PE. When I arrived, I told the secretary that if that teacher wanted her planning period back I would be happy to help her out with that - she was welcome to send her kids to me during my free period.

You would have thought I gave her a million dollars... but seriously - what was I going to do with a free period? Other teachers found out what I did and I was bombarded all day with accolades - which is super-nice, but honestly, I felt sad that any other sub wouldn't have done the same thing...

It was second and third grade PE - and I was thrilled that I always carry my whistle, that's for sure! I also had a ton more fun than I thought I would.

Since I coach a bunch of teams and sports, P.E. is an easy and enjoyable day for me. I am glad that you had fun with the classes.

I recently covered a sixth grade class and the entire day was almost trouble free! I enjoyed the time with the students. There were a few attempts by students to get off track but it was easy to bring them back to the lesson. I actually taught the entire day. That alone made it a great day.

It ended up that I will only have one day this month that I will not have worked.

I went in at 12 and subbed until 3 for 2nd grade. They finished making Christmas cards for the principal, did a math timed drill, and I gave them answers to a math worksheet they already did monday, and then watched a Christmas movie the rest of the day. It was the easiest day.

Well, it's time to get out of Christmas vacation mode & back to the grind! Some of you work tomorrow, so remember to post how your day went when you get home! :)

It's interesting for others to read & we may learn something to do in our own experiences!

I picked up a job on Aesop for tomorrow. It's for a high school special ed teacher. I've subbed for her in the past and I know that she spends a lot of her day assisting in inclusion classes.

It should be an easy first day back!

Thanks! It was a great way to ease back into the old routine.

I was in inclusion math classes for three periods. The regular teacher did all of the teaching. I just helped a little when the students were practicing on the boards.

I clipped coupons for two solid periods when I was in inclusion classes for computer lab. No one needed any help.

I had just one class by myself. That was just with four students, so it went well.

As I was walking in the hallway at noontime (where the students congregate after eating lunch), one of the students yelled out, "Hey, Mrs. L! We love ya!"
    Crazy kids!

I had a great day today - my favorite assignment: Third Grade resource. I took the taped Spanish lesson too for the regular teacher so she thinks I am fabulous (the littlest things - I tell ya!) and then had a planning period so I shelved books in the library. All around good day... Loved it!

I had a unique day yesterday. I subbed for speech class like I do all the time & it's a pull-out method where the kids come frm another class to me for 30 min. I hv about 5 or 6 grps in a day.

What made yesterday different is that I was introduced to a brand new speech pathologist that the dist had just hired. She was going to be at the middle school I was at, so we had hrs to really talk, talk, talk. I gave her my sub card of course so I'm so far the only sub she knows! It was like I was getting paid to talk to an expert in the speech pathology field (since I'm a new speech-language pathology (SLP) student! I think I made a good impression on her! :)

    Sounds good JadeCrane!

Hopefully so. I know about 1/2 or more of the SLPs in my large district (one if not the largest district in my county) & I think I have a good reputation amongst them, otherwise, I wouldn't keep getting all these long term assignments! These days, I'm at 3 different schools every week until the end of the school yr. I know I'll get to go to lunch sometime w/ at least one of them, maybe another too! :)

When I apply to grad school for the 2nd time, I'll be able to ask some of them for a recommendation letter. In fact, I have to start making a list of who to ask in a few mos. There's a principal & the director of Pupil Personnel Services (the head of the SLP people). I should be looking good on my grad school app...plus already having a Masters doesn't hurt! :D

That's great, Ms. I! It's always good to have contacts.

I stepped in to say "Hi" and speak to the Speech teacher at the school I'm subbing at now. There are 2 students in the class I'm in who are pulled out for speech and I wanted to check with her to see what time they'll be pulled out. I am not interested in being a Speech teacher, but she said to come by any time I'm not subbing if I want to observe her. I like to pick up techniques that I can apply in the classroom from different areas. I also observed a Behavior Therapist who works with children with autism to see some techniques they use.

Monday I get a lovely first grade class that I ADORE even more. Next Thursday and Friday I get to sub for my mom when she's at an ed conference. I am excited about the upcoming days!!

Well, I was called today to sub but I didn't take the job. Namely because I was called at 6:07, the school starts at 7:45, I would have to be there 30 minutes before that time, and the school is 30 minutes away. I had planned to get up early and shower in case I were called, but that obviouly didn't happen. So, I am here today.

I feel the same way as well. I am going to stick with subbing though because once I start subbing for more than just the one district, I know I will more than likely have a job everyday. I will probably get a second job though for some evenings and the weekends. I have a MAJOR student loan bill I have to pay. Ugh.

I haven't had a sub assignment all week long! I am even doubtful about tomorrow. I do have assignments for Mon, Tue, and Wed though. Thank goodness.

That's great. I was called Monday and today and didn't take the jobs, worked yesterday, so Tuesday was the only day I would not have been able to work. Technically, I could have worked 4 days this week so far. Tomorrow morning I could get a call too.

It just takes awhile for the calls to come in after break. I find it difficult to walk into a classroom since I've already had my own for 2 years. And lately, I've only been getting called for half days or aide positions, neither which I will/could take because of daycare expenses.

    Ugh. I'm sorry emma.

Tami-there is one school in this district that is on the other side of town that takes me about 30 minutes to get to. Most of the aide/half day positions have been for that school so that's an added "not worth it".
