Hello everybody I developed a system of learning by heart the multiplication table in an easy way, and it's been used in Israel in a form of a kit. In order to adapt correctly the multiplication kit to the American pupil, I need to find out the way the lines in the multiplication table are being taught in America, namely if you carry on until times 12. Example: when teaching line 2, do you teach: 2x1, 2x2, 2x3, 2x4, 2x5, 2x6 ,2x7 ,2x8, 2x9, 2x10, 2x11, 2x12 or do you teach up to 2x10 while lines 11 & 12 are taught separately after teaching all ten lines up to 10x10. This depends on state curriculum for each grade level. We don't have a 'true' national curriculum. many state have adopted Common Core standards but again it depends on grade level. Grade 3 tends to be up to 10 and multiplying with multiples of ten.
In California, we teach up to 12 in the first way that you mentioned. 2x0, 2x1, 2x2, 2x3, 2x4, 2x5, 2x6 ,2x7 ,2x8, 2x9, 2x10, 2x11, 2x12 would be taught all at once.
My students are from low income areas. Most of them struggle with this task, and parents will not help. The best method I have found relies on first memorizing skip counts of one factor. Each number gives an answer to that factor. When the student can easily and quickly say and write them, show them how to write them out for that factor. Let the student do the same 3 times and then saying them aloud. Do not move to another factor until the first one is learned. Start with the twos- then go up- Example- of the 6's Learn to Skip count 6 12 18 24 30 36 42 48 54 60 Show them- 1X6=6 2X6=12 3X6=18 4X6=24 5X6=30 & so on Have them write/say each one 3 times. ++++ I have not found flash cards to be of help in memorizing them. They can help with speed once they know them. I have not seen a computer program that works well. Common core says to learn them well by 3rd grade- an ambitious task. My school tries to do it by 4th grade. I have seen students that will learn them and then forget them unless regular repetition(homework) is assigned. I hope this makes sense and works for you.
And I would certainly practice many activities for the concepts first, starting with the most hands-on activities. Have them verbalize what they create with manipulatives.
