I am teaching an adult basic ed math class at nights to ESL students who have VERY basic communication skills to begin with...

and I need to teach division. I have not taught this since.. ever!?

So any ideas, especially visual aids, would REALLY be appreciated.

    thanks.

First make sure they ALL KNOW their mult. facts.
Then use an overhead proj. if you have it or
white board and start out very simple. like 24/6=4 but write it
the traditional way to show the work. And go over the steps
    MANY times
    divide
    mult
    subt
    bring down

Solicit questions often and have them do only 2 or 3 at a time until they seem to get it.

I have used graph paper to help the kids keep the numbers lined up properly. This is especially helpful with longer division.

    (Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring Down)

Maybe those basic words will help them remember the steps.
