I used to do a how-to paragraph where I introduced the need for good instructions by first having students just write a paragraph on how to make a PB & J sandwich. After all paragraphs were written, I handed out supplies and had kids trade papers and attempt to make the sandwich based solely on the instructions. This always led into fun discussions about the importance of clear, sequential directions.

Now that PB is banned due to students with allergies, can anyone suggest another food related topic that kids could write paragraph about? It would need to be something that doesn't involve actual cooking. Cereal sounds kind of lame. I considered bologna sandwiches. Smores might work, but they have to be heated. (I guess we could cart in a microwave just for this project....) I just thought someone else might be more creative. I am looking for creative ways to get kids working during summer school!!

What if they wrote directions about how to wrap a present? And then they switched the papers and tried to wrap one according to the student's directions...Or, I was thinking trail mix, but it doesn't matter what order you put it in when assembling.
