I have a friend who is interested in becoming a paraprofessional. However, she is heavily involved in roller derby and every now and then needs a couple days off to fly to this state or that to help coach. In my mind, if you are a paraprofessional, you need to be there 5 days a week b/c those students and teachers depend on you. Are there many part time positions in this field? And, how can she go about getting into it? Thank you.
In my school the only part time position is someone who relieves on rotation a few of the one-on-one special ed paras mid-day for lunch, etc. That doesn't mean they don't need to be there 5 days a week. I can't see one like that unless it was a prep only para but I think most are going to be expected to do more than that.
Where I live, most positions are part time, but they're 5 days a week with varying hours on each day. There are probably some that are only on certain days, but they're few and far between. Her best option might be subbing, as someone else mentioned. She might want to start with volunteering and getting some relevant experience and then just applying for jobs. In CA, most jobs require you to have taken the CBEST or a test that that's specific to their district, both options being very simple basic skills assessments. Oregon might have its own requirements or testing. Can she just look at some job listings and see what they ask for?
