How often is your room cleaned? Is it a thorough cleaning (wiping tables, straightening desks, etc) or is it just a hit with the broom and the trash taken out? We have had issues this year getting our rooms cleaned. I think my room is averaging once a week now. I have started sweeping it every couple of days and leaving the pile at the front of the room. I can tell when someone comes in because the pile is gone. Trash is occasionally taken out, but I don't think the chairs and tables are touched.
Mine only has the trash taken out daily. No vacuuming or other cleaning is done unless I do it myself. It's an old church building, and dust is constantly multiplying and is hard to reach to clean. My old school had wonderful janitors that would vacuum, and clean desks and tables daily.
Our floors are swept and trash emptied every night. This year, they empty my pencil sharpener for me. During cold/flu season, the desks are sprayed with some type of sanitizing spray. My carpet area only gets vacuumed once in a while, unless I do it myself.
Our floors are swept, trash emptied, and counters wiped off each day. Our desks are wiped, white boards cleaned, and floors mopped once a week, unless needed sooner. My room always looks nice. Any mess in my room is clutter that is my fault.
Our rugs are vacuumed every afternoon. The garbage cans are emptied, the desks put back into rows and the boards are washed.
Our rooms are never cleaned except in the summer. We are responsible for cleaning them ourselves including taking trash out, washing our boards, sweeping the floors, wiping desks down, etc... They supply us with everything we need to clean. We can offer service hours to kids who come in and clean for us so I have two boys that come in and sweep and do my boards almost daily and they get about 30 minutes per day. We also use detention kids to clean our rooms. One of my kids straightened my desk for me and organized everything today for his detention! I was so grateful!
Ours are vacuumed daily (if the cleaner is there), garbage emptied, and tables wiped with water. There is supposed to be cleaner in there, but I have yet to see the cleaner put any in. The best part is that he won't move a thing-he wipes around it. Even though we repeatedly tell him to move it and place it back, he says that is not his job. He is retiring this year.
Our rooms are vacuumed daily but it's not a great vacuuming. The trash is taken out daily as well. Our whiteboard is supposed to be wiped down once a week and our desks never get cleaned unless we clean them.
They take the garbage daily if I tie the bag and leave it outside of my room. If I want my recycling taken, I leave the bin outside the room. Other than that, all they do is vaccum, which I'm not convinced gets done that often. I'm there pretty late sometimes and I've never seen anyone vaccuum. By room is always pretty clean, and I never have kids eat in there or anything (except for once or twice a year for a special occasion- we don't have snack or anything though) so it's just really not that dirty as it is. Last year, I worked the after school program where I had to give snack in my room- and there would be bits of food left for weeks. Sometimes I gave up and went and asked for the vaccuum myself. Anything else- cleaning desks, white boards, etc. is my responsibility. In their defense, our school building this year is HUGE (it's new) and we only have 1.5 custodians. We have about 600 kids, and it literally takes me several minutes just to walk from my room down to the office- it's very spacious.
Same here. Garbage and compost bins are emptied twice a day (after lunch and either after school or before school begins in the morning). Classroom floors are swept at least once every 24 hours, the hall floors are swept 4 times/day (after each entry and at the end of the day) and mopped nightly.
Floors are swept, trash removed, and boards are perfectly cleaned daily. I think the desks are wiped down daily as well, but it may be every couple of days now. Our cleaning crew is awesome!
Wow! I'm a bit jealous! Our trash is taken out daily and the floors are swept a few times a week. The floors are vacuumed once in awhile. If we want the board cleaned, desks arranged or cleaned, recycling taken out, etc., we do it ourselves.
Our trash is taken out daily, toilets and sink are cleaned in my room daily and the floors are vacuumed daily. Everything else I have to do but I think that is more than fair.
We do basic cleaning of our boards, and can ask the caretakers if we need to use chemical cleaner. It would never cross my mind to ask the caretakers to move student desks; they will move heavy furniture when we request it.
I agree...my desks were in three different configurations this week for different lessons and I wouldn't ever ask the cleaning staff to do that. And I'm VERY particular about the chalkboard...I very rarely use it (I use my agenda board daily, but I take care of that, and otherwise I use the projector), so while I know students love to randomly write on boards, I strictly forbid it because that means she has to clean the whole board. One exception: last day. I bust out all the colored chalk and let them decorate.
Our rooms were mopped daily, but we were expected to have the floors picked up and swept. They also took out the trash every day. Heavier cleaning usually got done on the weekends. The kids knew that if they showed up to school on Saturdays, the P would make sure lunch was served. For many of my students, this was the only meal they could count on, so they showed up, looking for stuff to do. The P would put them to work helping out in the office, helping to clean up graffiti, helping any teachers that were present, or getting extra help if a teacher was there who was willing to donate time (most of us were, for at least an hour or so).
Garbage taken out and counters cleaned each day. Vaccumed floor most days. They don't touch the desks and I would not expect them to, that is the students responsibility. Anything that needs to be picked up on the floor before vaccuming also needs to be done by students, they put it there, they need to keep it clean. Boards are basically our responsibility unless we request, which I never do.
They take the garbage out, it took several weeks before they began remembering the little can under my desk! They move all garbage cans to the door. Drives me nuts! My floor is vacumed daily, only because I complained about it not being done. Most rooms don't get swept daily! I have carpet. Desks, chalkboards, chairs, cots are our responsibility. I do know from my former school that desks weren't cleaned there either some years, it's a matter of money.
Nightly: -Vacuumed -Trash emptied Weekly -Desktops cleaned Occasionally -Dusted Teachers have to wipe boards, straighten desks, and pick stuff up off of the floor. If it can't be vacuumed (pencils, paper, etc.), the cleaning company is supposed to leave it on the floor. I'm just thankful that my room gets vacuumed and the garbage cans are emptied nightly. I don't have boards to clean (I just use my Smartboard), and I have my students wipe off their own desks once a week. Works for me!
If I'm lucky, I get a half-hearted sweep 2-3 times a week, and maybe a trash dump every day or two. I once went four months with the same nasty, nasty trash bag. Nothing else gets done. Honestly, all I need hm to do is sweep daily, take out the trash daily, and mop every so often.
Trash cans are emptied daily, floors are vacuumed once or twice a week. The desks only get cleaned if I do it, and they don't touch the boards. The grossest thing is all the gum stuck under the desks--I hate to move them for fear of sticking my finger in some ancient Juicy Fruit. Ick! I wish they'd get it all scraped off over the summer, but that's wishful thinking.
I have the most amazing custodian ever. What she does everyday: Vacuum Straighten desks Wipe down every flat surface (my desks, student desks, counters, shelves ... everything) Washes my white board and chalk board One time, my students brought food for a party and 1 of them left a crockpot of cheese dip. I had told the student to make sure she returned for the crockpot, but she didn't. I left without thinking about it. But, when I returned the next morning the crockpot was spotless. I felt SO bad that I left that for my custodian. I didn't MEAN for her to have to clean it. She is a really cool lady, too. If we had more opportunities to see each other I know we would be friends. I just don't run into her often since she works in the evening.
-Floors and trash are daily. -Dusting...NEVER! -Vacuum is weekly...although my room is daily because I have tons of students who love to put rocks in their mouth. We have pea gravel on our playground and it travels into our room. -Tables are washed twice per week by janitors, however, my aide cleans them everyday after snack.
It depends on how much can get done. We only have 1 evening custodian, so it just depends on how messy the rest of the school is. My garbage is taken out daily, floors are swept twice a day (kids eat lunch in the classroom) and mopped once. My carpet is vacuumed regularly, and the tables are washed regularly as well. My boards are cleaned as needed. I try to clean as much as possible to help out.
The janitor comes every other day. The floors get vacuumed, the sink gets cleaned and the trash gets dumped. A PP mentioned a trash bag she had for four months, we have the same issue. I finally questioned the janitor and he told me the districts policy is to change the liner TWICE a year! When they start to get gross I rip a whole in them so we can get a new one. The students help me clean the desks as often as I remember.
Our rooms are cleaned every night, Carpets are vacuumed on Fridays, and desks cleaned on Fridays also.
HA! This post made me laugh. Here's why: The only thing the janitors do is empty my trash cans each night. Therefore, every day, I have several students who volunteer to help me for 15 minutes after school. We sweep (my classroom doesn't have carpet), pick up trash, straighten the desks, sharpen dull pencils, and wipe off desks. I usually have about 3-5 students who assist me with these tasks, so we finish pretty quickly. Needless to say, these kids who help me each afternoon are invaluable. :thumb:
Due to a severe lack of custodians in my school, and a hiring freeze that won't help, here's what we get every day: Vacuum the room and take out the trash. That's it. No desks, no boards, nothing else. We have our own cleaning supplies for the desks and I get that done when I have time to do so which is about once a week or twice a week. We have 4 custodians in my school (PreK - 1st) with 35 classrooms plus 2 gyms and the cafeteria. This doesn't count the special ed and early childhood classrooms nor the offices. They get to work at 6:00 a.m. and don't leave until 6:00 p.m. So not much gets done in our rooms anymore and... we're okay with that I guess.
Ours are on a rotation throughout the building. Some days nothing gets cleaned, even the trash isn't taken. But when they do get to our wing, the two people who clean for us work so hard that my room is actually cleaner than it was last year (the guy "cleaned" every day and it was awful.) They wipe down the desks, clean the floor, and do the trash. If I ask really nicely, they will wash my boards.
