I teach high school and have redone seating charts as often as every new unit and as rarely as once per semester. Has anybody found a good frequency or rhyme and reason that they like?

Once per year, in September, when there are new students in the chairs.

I have normally allowed students to sit where they want. They are told that they will change their seat if it becomes a problem and they won't be allowed to go back to the original seat for the rest of the year. Usually one change of chatters shows the students I mean what I say and that solves any further problems.

As needed. For some classes, that's as often as weekly. Others don't need an adjustment all year.

We switch between rows and groups pretty often. Mostly the pick their own permanent seat, and I mix them up for activities often. I leave the permanent seating chart in my sub binder. That’s their seat when I’m out. I teach 8th grade.

At the beginning of each quarter. This allows for variety and for me to make adjustments mid-semester based on knowing the students (who needs to sit up front, etc.).

Of course I reserve the right to move specific kids whenever I wish. In probably half of my classes there are a couple of tweaks that have to made a few days after the new seating chart is implemented.

Frequently. Each time I find one of my classes needing adjustment, I set new charts for all. Most charts make it 3 weeks. Some, way less. I also let different students rearrange the desks to their liking and make seating charts based on their arrangements. Those are often in 2 week increments because they don't choose as well as I do. ;)
