How much money do you make?

I was just curious about the rate of pay for teachers in the states? Does it depend on how many degrees you have? What is the average starting salary of a teacher? Does each individual state regulate education? Do you have to take a test before getting a teacher's cert? Just curious about teaching in the states.

 

Base salary plus stipends: $52,000.

Summer school: $4,000.

Night classes at the local community college: $8,500.

Yes, extra money for Master's or EdD, PhD, etc. Yes, each state adheres to its own standard of certification, and some states will honor a certification from elsewhere. Average starting salary around here: $40,000. Yes, lots of tests.

 

Wow, I live in Virginia and the starting pay with a Masters degree in my area is $36,000.

 

Southern California:

Base for starting teachers = $45,000

Math/Science Bonus = $5,500+


Masters = + $2 - $5k per year

Extra Duty and Sub Pay = $34/hour

Need to take a basic skills test and subject specific test

Starting with a BA is $42,000 and MA is $46,000

States are in charge of their education, but depending where you are either the district or county may have additional requirements/expectations.

 

Ha, rural Nebraska=$23,000-$25,000 starting BA

 

With out a masters starting pay is 27,000 this year and next it will be 30,000 in Maine. Some districts will pay more if they can afford to.
What do teachers make in Alberta?

 

Now that's just nuts.

 

Starting pay in Washington is about $28,000 with a BA.
With a Masters, you make about $38,000.

You move up on the pay scale according to number of years and number of credits. The maximum amount is $52,000. This includes 25+ years of experience and/or a Ph.D. Both get the same amount.

 

Well, keep in mind that teachers here are paid in cdn dollars. Starting teachers in Alberta presently make about 40 000 give or take. When I started teaching I taught in Saskatchewan where they made less. I started in 1998. I started at 30 000 per year. After 10 years you are at the top of the grid so you do not get anymore increments. I'm at 61 000 right now in Alberta.

We do not have to take any tests to get certified. After you graduate you have to jump through the hoops to get a certificate. It is also kind of pain if you want to switch provinces. Lots of paper work involved to get the Alberta cert. Also when you move to Alberta you get an interim certificate that expires after 3 years. The Superintendent has to write a letter to the gov't to get a permanent certificate.

 

Starting pay for me was $25,550. I make $28,930 now. I will be moving to a new school in Jan. in the same state (different county) and the pay will be $32,440! Some counties can afford to supplement locally. So I have some friends that teach in this new county I'm going to that JUST started teaching this year and they already make more than me! I will also get a $1500 sign on bonus (which is just since it is one semester-otherwise it'd be $3,000). The base pay for NC, however, went up this school year. So now teacher's can start at $28,510 instead of the $25,550 that I did last year.

In AZ, it depends on the school district. First year teacher in my district w/ BS: $26,500. With a dual cert or Master's: $29,000. In the bigger Phoenix metro area though, you can start anywhere from $30,000 - $38,000.
To be spec ed certified, I had to take 3 tests for a total of about $500. This was after I put myself into major debt to obtain my BS. And moving from state to state is a hassle. More tests and more money paid out.

 

I am a first year teacher making $36K with a Bachelors only in a small coastal county in SW Florida.

 

I think this is about what our base pay is too. I teach at a Catholic school and they always pay less. Public around here has base pay somewhere between 28,000 and 32,000.

 

I can't believe how hight the pay is in other states! Im a first year teacher and I have a BA. Only $25,000!

 

I live in southern NJ. Every district is different around here. The lowest is $38,00 and the highest is $44,000.My district starts at $42,00.

Top out at 54,242 with BA....MA....70,000

Keep in mind, folks-- the standard of living has a lot to do with it. On Long Island NY, and the whole metro NY area, you can't buy a house for under $300,000-- and that's pretty much a handyman's special. So the pay scales will fluctuate with the standard of living.

Sorry, I'm in a Catholic HS, and have no idea what anyone else makes. I will tell you that when I started with a BA in 1980, I was making $9.700-- OUCH!!

 

It definitely has a lot to do with the cost of living...Around the DC area you can't get ANYTHING for under $300,000 - not even a 1 bedroom condo or townhouse! It's crazy, everything costs so much more, gas, food, you name it, it's more here...

Our scale tops out at $93,000, but more if you have national board etc. That's for Masters + 60 graduate credits and 25 years of teaching. Basically with some of the other extras teachers can make a little over $100,000. I'm sure it will be more in a few years with inflation, but we have a really great union that gets along well with the county so negotiations go smoothly...

 

I forgot to mention that with our Q-comp program (Teacher alternative pay program) we can earn a bonus of up to $2,000 dollars at the end of the year

 

In Atlanta, you start off at around 40,300. If you have a master's degree that's an additional 5,000 on your salary. However, take into consideration the cost of living, traffic, commuting, etc.

You also get $500 extra for getting BA+15, BA+30, MA, MA+15 and etc.... woo hooo

Here its about 38000 w/o a masters. I think with a masters you get about 900 more. Something like that.

It's my understanding that you start at the MA base rate. The rate itself varies per school district.

 

In Ontario, Canada, in my district, I started at approx. $40 000, currently make about $56 000 and top out at $80 000.

 

I have my BS and I started at about $28,000. This is one of the lowest in the state. The rest of Oregon starts at about $30,000

 

My district (in Central California) is working on bringing up the level of pay for new teachers to be better balanced with those on the higher end. I started a year ago at $35,700 or so, but it's been bumped up a bit to $37,000 so far. We just heard about a possible increase to bring us even more in line with districts throughout the state. It's about time something good happened!!

 

Our district is currently negotiating for a new contract also. The negotiations have not been going all that well. There is talk of a possible strike.

This is why teachers' unions bother me. The word union implies, well, unity...but teachers' unions are inherently divisive!

Jonny, what school district are you working for? I will be moving back to Alberta either this summer or next summer and was planning on looking for a job in Edmonton and Calgary. I remember when Edm. public went on strike years ago...

 

I miss having a union here in Georgia. I teach sp.ed. and am with my students from the time they arrive to the time they leave. I am suppose to get a 30 minute duty free lunch which I don't, as I have to eat with my students and I do not get a prep period. It is also pretty well hit or miss on whether I get a sub when my parapro. is absent.
