How many students are you scheduled to have this year?

I have 19. 10 girls, 9 boys. 2 Gifted and 3 LD. One girl was formerly ESOL. One is also slightly hard of hearing, yet I have taught students who have been before (2 my first year).

(This was edited on Friday, August 4, 2006. I have my list now.)

My list right now has 21, 11 boys and 10 girls. My whole grade has about 20-22 each (there are 4 classes).

I will have 34 - the max in our district for 5th grade.

In addition to how many you have, how many can you have? Will your class start full?

I have 23. 12 girls and 11 boys, but because of the class size reduction rules... they may add another fourth grade unit, We are staffed at 22. That would make 8 fourth grades at our school!!

22-23 right now. It has changed every day :) I think I have more girls than boys, and 3 "pretty smart" (perhaps gifted). Need to look at their files closer.

Ms. Jasztal, you are so lucky to have under 20 for fourth grade. Upper elementary in my district is about 28-35. I wish I knew how many kids I had. I don't think we get our rosters until 1 week before school starts.

When I got my class list the other day, I had 16, but was handed the list with the warning that it was likely to change still. 16 would be great!! Last year I had 17, which was an awesome size. My only complaint about 17 was that you cannot make even groups out of 17!! 16 would be so great. I hope it stays that way!

Right now I have 19. 10 boys and 9 girls. That could all change though! We start school on Wednesday and it always amazes me the parents that register their kids for school on the 1st day!

Right now we have 3 fourth grades of 16 each, but I don't expect that to last. Last year it was 2 classes with 24 each. Another building in our district has 2 open fourth grade positions that I know of. I think there will be shuffling as registration picks up when our secretaries return next week.

Before I left for the summer, I had 22 students in my class. That could also change with people enrolling their kids at the last minute.

I have 22 students. That is double from what I had last year...I know you all will kill me, but last year I had 11 1st graders. It was fabulous!!! I am not sure on how many girls/boys. I haven't gotten a class roster yet.

Our primary classes (grades 1-3) will have a maximum of 20 students. The other grades aren't capped, but most will start this coming year with between 25 and 30 students and will continue to grow as new students move into the area. I started last year with 23 students and grew to a maximum of 31. (This year I'll be teaching Special Ed and have 30 names on my list as of the end of June).

I have 21 right now. There were still some new students to be placed so I assume I will have around 23 on the first day. We usually only end up with around 19-20 by the end of the year though.

Well, folks please don't hate me, but as of a couple of days ago I only have 8. Yep that's right EIGHT!!! Now all of them are ESL--recent immigrants. And is typical with "Beginning" ESL (English Second Language/English Language Learners) they just haven't fully settled into their new living environments yet. That and some still have not finished the move...I know for a fact that those numbers will be going up, since that only includes those who moved here late in the year last year. I expect that I'll have a minimum of 18 to as many as 30/35. I will fully know when I get a "real schedule" next week, and after school begins on the 14th.

    Good Luck Everyone,
    heidi

I will have 32 students next year - 16 boys/16 girls. The max for our district in fifth grade is 31, but, according to our contract, if we must go over the 31 limit by one student, we get paid an additional 250 dollars per semester. Last year I had 32 students, got the additional $250 for the first semester. Then one student moved, so I didn't get the money. Because it makes little difference to have 31 or 32, I'd rather have the 32 students and make an extra 500 dollars to spend in my classroom. Boy, I hope this makes sense!

That is a lot of 10 and 11yrs olds in the same room. How do you get them all to fit? And yes, you did make sense about the $500. Best of luck to you.

It is a lot of kids, you're right! My classroom isn't all that big, either, (not to mention it is an open-type classroom with 3 other 5th grades of the same size). I arrange my desks in a U-type shape, leaving a large area in the center for me to walk around and get to all the kids. It allows me an area for all the kids to sit, if I'd like, and I'm also able to get my overhead projector in there without moving desks, etc. I've tired other desk configurations, but this one works best for me.

we haven't gotten our class lists yet, I'll see mine on Aug. 21 or 22. However, I taught K last year, and I'm moving up to 1st this year, so based on last year's numbers, we should each have 21-22kids. We were an at choice school for two schools in our district that had not made AYP, but I think they both made it this year and we are no longer an at choice school for them, which hopefully means our numbers will drop. I would love to have 17 kids...that would be heaven! :) Last year we each had 22 K kids... Our max number is 25, then we get an aide. I'm looking forward to seeing my list...especially since I'm pregnant and going out for maternity leave in late Feb/early March. I'm hoping for a smalller class or one with less behavior issues than last year (which probably won't happen, b/c all 3 teachers had several kids with behavior issues last year). However, one can dream, right? :)

27 kids in my class. I'm pissed with my district because we had five teachers at first in my grade level - averaging 20-22 kids per room. Then, the powers that be decided to ax one teacher, send him back to second grade and piled on more students to me and my colleagues. Our cap is 30 but we have no contract stipulation that gives us extra money for extra students. However, I do get bothered that a school down the street from mine averages 10-11 students less per class and we get paid the same amount of money. That's a whole other story...

Hey, I can relate. We need to redistrict in our system due to the inequity in the numbers. Our classes are all at max (32), while the schools down the street are at 19 - 20. Something is wrong with that picture!

    Wow. Where do you teach?

We have 5 fourth grade classes- 2 capped at 16... yet that's obviously not me. The fourth grade max is currently 22 or 23, I believe.

I teach in a large district in Oakland County in Southeastern Michigan. Many other school districts in that county have caps of 20 or so. Unfortunately, our district isn't one of them!

I believe the entire state of Florida (in public school) has to abide by pretty strict rules, yet a lot of schools violate because they're just getting more and more crowded.

I teach in Escambia County(Pensacola) I know there are a lot of (supposed) cons to class size reduction....but as a teacher and a parent I can only see the benefits!
Why are two of your classes capped at 16?

looloo, I'm sorry....my choice for my personal kids is all boys, I can't imagine all girls aaahhhh

we're semi-departmentalized, so right now we're supposed to have 23, 21, 21, however, as people keep registering, I think it's going to be closer to 25, 23, 23. There is a cap at one class at 27, the other two at 26, then we can get another teacher.
