    Too Many Human Beings!!

 I started out with 31 last year and ended up with 33. It is insanity. Try to do SOMETHING quick ... before you fall in love with all of them. If necessary ... go to the school board. Activate the parents!! Kids deserve better!

As of today there are 18, but that will probably change 3 or 4 times before school starts.

I can;t believe how big some of your classes are! I have 20. I don't know if its our state or our school but we are only allowed to have 22 or 23 before they have to add another teacher. Does anyone else have a rule like this?

I'll have 32 this year. It's the most I've had since my first year of teaching in 1977 when I had 34 fourth graders. Ugh. It'd be great to have those low twenties!

I started 2 weeks ago with 30 students. It is so crowded, I'm tripping over backpacks and having to walk sideways. We are HOPING to open up another 4th grade class but we need 4 more students to push us over. Last year I was in heaven with 26 (funny how 4 more can make such a difference)..the year before I had 34.

I teach at a migrant head start and I have 10 children right now. I can have up to 18 but the assistant who has been there longer than me says they have never reached that number. Two of mine leave at the end of this month for kindergarten.

I have 14 students. 7 first graders and 7 second graders with the possibility of one more second grader. After looking at some of your class sizes, I know this is paradise.

I'm up to 24. Our top out is 25, but the superintendant(sp?) decided to take a hit if we get more. We have no more room (an thats with 3 modulars-6 classrooms). We've already borrowed a room from the west side. We have 2 more slots open then we'll be over. One way to solve this is if they hire another aide. We'll see. I'd like to see them try and put more than 25 students in my room. We'll have to take out furniture (cubbies, computers, etc..). I don't think they'll overload the modulars (at least I hope not).

Wow...one would really think that in this day and age with "NCLB" and all of the testing...people would realize that classes of 25, 30, 35 students are not the best idea! I am not sure if we have a cap on the number of students in intermediate grades. I am actually relieved to have 27 on my roster as of right now....because a few weeks ago, my secretary told me that I had 30...and I thought for sure I would end up with 35 students (I teach in a military community...so there is a lot of turn around of students...and people always enroll at the last minute). Now maybe I will only hit 30 or so...boy I hope not...my classroom is TINY! We had trouble fitting 20 in here last year!

Right now I have 20. The other 3rd grade rooms have 19 so they will get the new students first so I hope to keep 20 in my room.

Last year I had 23 children and 8 were special education children. I looped with that class. This year I will have 20 and 6 are special education children.

    re: # of students

According to our enrollment numbers as of early last week...
    1st @ 20/21
    2nd @ 23/24
    3rd @ 24
    4th @ 26/27
    5th @ 20/21

Our district likes to keep class numbers under 23 whenever they can. However it is a school average that is used to determine whether or not we get an additional classroom. The average in each classroom has to be 23. Right now we are at 22.75 students per room! Gotta hope that we enroll some more kids in either 4th/5th grade to help out with the ratios. Of course, we could be higher than those numbers because one day last week 14 students were registered.

Right now my rosters show six classes of between 16 and 31 students each.

But when I was in the middle school, I taught seven classes daily, and each had over thirty students. One had 39. My biggest class ever was about ten or so years ago, and I had 47 students. There wasn't even room for that many desks in my classroom, so some of the students had to sit on the floor, leaning against the wall. Can you even IMAGINE?

It looks like 18 this year. I had 22 last year. We had a number of new students enroll and so we got a new 4th grade teacher, can't wait to meet her. I'm still a little peeved because it looks like I got all the "behavioral problems" and the other teachers have 15 and 16 kids. Why is it that once the principal deems a teacher as a "strong" teacher for that particular grade level...they get all the problematic kids???? He says "I can trust you to handle them"...ummmmmmmm can I get a easy bunch???

    Jane,
In the district my daughters attend I went to Open House 2 years ago on the night after my middle school age daughter came home and told me that she didn't get a chair or desk in class because it was so full. When I talked to the principal that night, he agreed class sizes were too large, but said that it wasn't possible to hire a teacher over night. I offered to have a list of names to him the next day! He said he would look into it. I assured him that I would be calling him twice a week until the situation was resolved. There was a new section added in 10 days.

I'm glad I came up on a non-contract day. I just got a new one at 4:00. School starts tomorrow. I had to go steal (I got permission) a desk. Hopefully I can find some extra chairs in the next week or so. I'm up to 25. Surely they won't put anymore out here. There's really no room.

Right now I have 23, but our school district allows the class size to go up to 30 before they split them. Our school doesn't start until the 29th, so I am not sure if I will get more before then.

I got my list today and now I have 21 2nd-grade students (10 boys and 11 girls). Our school keeps on growing. Our first grade classes have 22 or 23 students.
