School starts next week and we got our class lists today. The first grade teachers have between 27 and 30 students. I teach in an urban district, and we always have a large number of students register on the first day of school. We expect that by the end of the first week there will be at least 30 students in each class. I am still in shock. Last year I had 24 students for most of the year. I liked that number. How do you handle a class this large? To make matters worse, due to construction delays, today was the first day we were allowed in our classrooms. The new AC still doesn't work right and the building is so humid that the floors and walls are covered in water. The last thing we need is a student or a teacher to slip and fall.
Wow! Now I feel truly blessed! I am also in an urban district, but it's mostly a neighborhood school, and I have 17 students, and my co-teachers have 15 and 10! I'm hoping we can juggle some students so I can get down to about 14, lol. I'm so sorry about your situation! Keep your eyes (sinuses, etc.) on the lookout for mold - that can be much more dangerous than falling!
I didn't even think about mold. There has been a mold problem on the other side of the school for years. It is usually cleaned up right away, but it keeps coming back. Thanks for the tip! I think we will all feel better once the year has started and we can get a handle on everything.
Wow, I don't think I could fit 30 desks into my classroom! Good luck this year...I hope the kids are all angels for you!! I have 23 so far...and that number shouldn't go up unless we get a really late applicant (private school).
I have no idea how many I have. School starts Tuesday and we don't have our lists yet. Hopefully today! Our limit is 23. Once every teacher on the grade level has 23, we add another teacher. I cannot imagine having 27-30. Do your best to set those expectations those first weeks and practice, practice practice. And most importantly, please remember that you are NOT superman/superwoman and that if something doesn't go perfectly, it is okay as long as you do your best.
So far, 22. Last year I had 26-27. I wish we had a cap, but they will stack my class and hire a part time aide before hiring another teacher.
I have 23 Kinders, the average last year was 14-17. We all have to have 3-4 more kids a piece before they think about hiring someone. It's def. an adjustment...it takes them 30 minutes to pee!
Thanks everyone! I'm feeling better about it today. I don't think it is fair to the students, but I am going to be the best teacher I can be for each of them. The construction has given me the opportunity to reorganize my class. I am very proud of my work today.
I'm at 21 students now, but I did survive a year with 34 first graders! It was tough for sure, but I did manage. Let's just say I really improved my classroom management skills that year!!!!
High school teacher, but I have classes of the following sizes, all general level classes: 33, 12, 33, 19, 22 I'm having issues with my high school classes of about 30. I can't imagine it with the little ones.
I originally had 23 on my roster, but down to 21 now. School starts Tuesday, so I'm sure I'll have a few more added the first week.
I have 18 - just got class list today! My first year I had 16, then 20, last year 21. 18 is sounding very good.
Each kindergarten teacher has 18 in my school. They had 3 K teachers with 24 kids each, and the principal didn't like the numbers being that high, so she added me in as the 4th kinder teacher so we could have classes of 18.
We have 8 teachers in our grade level. 4 billingual The reg ed classes have between 18-20. The billingual classes have between 8 and 10. i taught 18 kindergarteners two years ago with no help. This year I have moved to a new district. There will be lots of help coming in and out of my room this year. I am sooo happy!!!
We have 5 sections of first grade and we have: 25, 25, 25, 24, 24. Our cap is 29. Last year was the first in awhile that I started at 24 and stayed that way for awhile. My first year in first grade I had 30 kids on my roster....we hired another teacher by the end of Sept.
I have 28. I have no clue where I'll fit all! I think that is way to many. Last year I had 21 and that was really nice.
Well, with the exception of the ELL class, we all have 29 students now. Our ELL class has 17 students, which is just about perfect for our program. We start GMADE next week. Do you know how long it takes to bubble 29 books? With no planning time? This has been such a long week.
Wow! We technically have a legal limit of 20 per class, although if a teacher has over that, a new class will not be started until there are at least 10 students over in all grade-level classes.
I have 20 and the for the first year, every child on my roster showed up. Last year I had 23, 24 with very little room to move. This year is a lot better and I they keep me busy. My smallest 1st grade class was 17 and it was nice.
I started over the summer with 13 on my list, then gained 2 and lost 1 so now I'm at 14. I feel very lucky to have a class this size considering it will be my first year at this level. Our school is very small and I am the only 1st grade.
I have 28 , I consider it a BIG NUMBER, specially cause they are so little... and as you imagine... CORRECTING AND GRADING is a chaos at school and at homeeeee also... I wish the day had 29 hours, I´d go on correcting... To be honest, I do not grade everyday, but then the consequence is even worse
School started last Tuesday and I ended up with 26 first graders. I have been told to look for 1 more on Monday bringing my total number to 27. There are desk everywhere!!!!! My line goes on for ever!!!! UPDATE: My class has hit the big 3-0!!! 30 first graders!!!! I have thirty desks in my room!
I think the cap for us would be 26 in both classes, then a new teacher would be added. We had 24 last year.
I have to laugh when we are walking down the hall and other teachers and building guests ask where my line ends. I did have one withdraw on Friday. She will now be going to the school where my sister is a first grader. The new student that I got on Thursday is 5! He was at a daycare with a kindergarten. He is completely lost, he can't even copy work from the board or a paper in front of him.
Have had as many as 27, last year 24, this year 19. No para, but I do have a student teacher and expect an intern two days a week next semester. We were projected to have 27ish each (3 track) so we added a 4th to get our numbers down. Hooray! Tell your principal that I said he/she should hire another first grade teacher pronto!
I have 17 due to the low enrollment. We had 25 last year but we are @ the lowest ever, due to the way the economy has turned. I have an assistant, but sometimes she is helping other teachers. Rebel1
I found out today that the numbers are this high across the district. I don't see them hiring 6 new teachers, so we will have to deal. I do have more bruises on my legs from walking into desks this year.
I have 25 this year. I think ANOTHER important number besides the class total is the number of "red flag kids." I am curious to see how many retainees, sped, bilingual, and behaviors you all have within your class. I have 4 retainees, 2 bilingual (one that speaks no English), 4 sped, and 7 red flag behaviors kids. Thanks for letting me vent.
1 red flag, 2 possible sped cases (but are sooo sweet), and the rest are great. I have never had this good of a feeling about a class at this point in the year. Love it!!
I have 2 retainees, 7 or 8 bilingual, 1 sped, 5 on my radar for sped, 5 speech, 5 potential behavior issues. Most of my students are at risk. Of my 28 students ONE showed up at our open house tonight. To make matters worse, the little brother started pulling my room apart. Mom said nothing. I also found out that third grade is getting a new teacher. Their numbers are just as high as ours. I am happy for them, but what about us? We were told that there is no room for another teacher. Sigh... Sorry for the ramble. Today was a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day!
I have 19 students. In Ontario the grade 1 classes are supposed to be capped at 20, but often they do go over by 2 or 3.
Started with 20 on my roster. One never showed up and the other withdrew on meet the teacher night. He is going to go to his mom's school. I have 18 now...get this....6 boys and 12 girls!!!
Wait....so some of y'all have numbers in the 20's WITH an assistant????? I have 27 now, including 2 sped.
So far I have 18... we were supposed to receive an updated class list on Friday, but we never got it. Never mind that we had 30 families come in to register their children last Thursday.
