I think subbing is really good to help you figure out what grade level you would want to teach. I knew i didn't want elementary , those kids are too young for me. My daughter was in 8th grade, so I asked for middles school for student teaching, and ended up getting 8th grade. I liked it, i felt that i could do 6th, 7th or 8th and subbed mostly in middle schools. I subbed in elementary a few times, which just confirmed that it wasn't for me. Then i ended up subbing at a high school lock up, and i loved how these kids were so much more mature. I did that for a year and a half, and really started loving high school. My daughter is now in 10th grade, so she's also a good point of reference for me. Quite a few times i still subbed at a lock up where they had a lot more middle school age kids, and now I knew that i would prefer high school. I would not have known this if didn't get tue chance to sub high school.
