We get 2 personal and 8 sick. As of my last check I had 89 days built up. I'd have more but I've donated quite a few days.
We get four personal days and 9 days of sick leave per school year. The sick leave rolls over into the next year but the personal leave turns into "sick leave" if you don't use it the previous year which is why so many seasoned teachers in my area will have hundreds of sick leave days and 4 or less days of personal leave.
We get 10 "temporary leave" days per year. They can be used as sick or personal days. I wonder if this is some sort of statewide thing because it's been that way in all 3 districts I've worked in. They do roll over. There also seems to be some sort of "unspoken agreement" that you use personal days for significant things like attending a wedding or something. I guess because there are so many of them. My dad gets 3 a year and he'll use them to just take a day off, go to the movies, get some food he likes, etc. I would just feel wrong doing that. It's also so much work to prepare for a sub that I wouldn't likely take a day off just for the fun of it. I haven't missed any days this year. Last year I used up every bit of my leave time going on interviews at the end of the year. I literally had 17 minutes of leave time left at the end, haha.
We only get 1 personal day, but we can use it however we'd like and don't have offer any explanations. I usually use it to just 'take a day' - I sleep in, go for lunch and shopping and relax.
I'm supposed to get 5 paid sick days, but when I got a really bad UTI (urinating blood, severe kidney pain) I was told I could not take a sick day because there is no one that can cover for me. I really hope I don't get sick again because it was a horrible experience. They even had me work a full day before finally getting someone to take me to the hospital.
I wanted to take a personal day near the very, very end of school last year and I assumed it would be questioned, so I emailed the P and explained what I would be using the day for. It wasn't a wedding or anything like that. Anyway, the P responsed something very close to: Hey, it's called a personal day for a reason. Don't feel like you to need to explain it to me. Enjoy!
