I have my main host teacher when I first did my student teaching in 2004, then my University Supervisor from my SPED program in 2007, and I'm planning on listing a principal that knows me more than others since she's at a small private school where I have subbed.

I am not listing any contact info or mentioning about the job I had at the beg. of this school year because they let me go (another private school).

I think starting out 3 is fine.

    I have three right now:

My co-operating teacher from Student Teaching
My university superviser from student teaching
My principal from my maternity leave replacement

I am thinking about asking my mentor from the leave replacement job to be a reference also, not sure aout that though.

I have 5 but I think 3-4 solid ones is enough. When I'm ready to job-hunt again (hopefully no time soon due to pink slips) I'll take off 2 of my references.

About half of my applications ask for five and the other half ask for three or four. I have five that I have asked to be references for this year; my principal from where I taught last semester, both my cooperating teachers from when I student taught, a reading teacher who was a professor or my reading clinic class and my supervisor from when I was a graduate assistant doing academic advisement in the education department of a college.

I say start with three. If they want more, be prepared to provide them.
