How many of you got hired this late in summer? Just out of curiosity, who on here has gotten hired this late in the game? I would love to hear success stories of getting hired at the last minute. I have an interview on Monday for a special education position with a top school district. I have also just been informed today of two openings within an alternative education program where I did a LTS last year. I have high hopes for all of it, and I'm still applying for jobs, but I don't want to get too excited! Any words of wisdom? Anything you can share that you did in end of the summer interviews that got you hired? Something "special"?
I just got an offer yesterday. It definitely isn't too late! I previously have been hired 3 or 4 days before the start of school. This is a nerve-wracking time because school is SO close to starting, but there is definitely hope! Good luck You will find something!
While I do not have experience getting hired this late, I do know someone who was hired here less than 2 weeks before school started. So it's never too late...last minute position open up, teachers decide to leave, etc. Good Luck!
It happens every year where I live. The district I just retired from goes back in a week and they still have almost 120 openings.
One year, I was hired the Friday before Labor Day weekend! We had an In-Service day Tuesday and the children came on Wednesday. I was teaching a special education class for grades 4th-6th.
I am returning to teaching after a couple years staying home. I though remember at my previous schools they always hired at least two or more new teachers the week before or after school began. It seems that in many urban areas parents tend to wait until the week before school starts to register their child, which causes the actually enrollment numbers to be much higher than predicted. Some years they even had parents waiting in the hallways of the school because the office had so many parents registering late. So it is definitely not anywhere near too late.
I just got a call Friday offering me a position! Don't give up help yet. My portfolio was a great ice breaker.
I was initially hired one week into the school year. Last year, we added a new teacher at the end of September. Don't give up.
My old school has hired as late as mid-October for increased enrollment reasons. (We started the 3rd week of August)
I just got an offer last week. The principal actually did a phone interview with me from her home. I am an out of state candidate. While I was on a phone interview with her, another principal actually texted me to set up an interview the next morning. Those principals are working hard to fill positions. Don't give up!
That is where I applied, but haven't heard anything yet. It has only been a few days, but I figured there would be a least a hint of something by now, with school starting so soon. I plan on calling Adline Monday, but not sure about Houston proper, I guess I just have to wait to see if they call me, as I have no reason to call.
I sent you a pm. Also, if you're open to other parts of Texas I know of a district in West Texas that has tons of openings.
I am, but Houston is my first choice as it is a town where I have family, therefore a couch to surf while I wait for a first paycheck. I am at a place financially, that I will have money to drive there.....and then I just might be screwed, but I have no choice, seven years looking here for anything isn't working. I will live in a tent if I have to. So please send it
I think many Texas districts are still hiring, and I keep seeing new jobs posted here and there. Keep applying. I had an interview this week, and they seemed a bit frantic to get people in so they could get through HR, so yeah, I'm hanging in there too!
I just got hired Tues (July 29th) of this past week. I applied the Wed before, got called Thurs for an interview on Friday afternoon, was told they would let me know by the following Wed. The P called me on Tues morning at 9:00 am and offered me the job I went in acting more confident than what I really was since it was my first ever interview for a teaching job!!! I just graduated this past Dec. One of the things I did was to read through all of the old interview question threads on here to get an idea of what might be asked so I could have a general idea of what I would say in response to those questions I don't think it is too late in the game to get a job. I really hope you get one soon
We had this happen to our daughter last year. When the class list went up it said TBD. There was a teacher hired by the first day of school. Districts are still positing jobs and hiring right now because of last minute changes and we go back to school around August 18.
I got hired on July 18th, I was finally cleared to start yesterday. I was getting calls for interviews as late as this past Wednesday, and I got hired as an LTS (last year) the day before school started. Don't give up hope!
A classmate of mine got hired a few days before she had to report to work. Also last year, I got a ton of interviews in mid-to-late August. Didn't have the luck of getting hired at the time, but others have.
So thankful for this post! I was just coming on the message board to ask the same question! I applied to a few public schools and had one with a lot of potential because I knew someone there, and have yet to hear anything. I am/was losing lots of hope, but I feel better after reading these posts! Thanks
Don't lose hope!!! There are always schools hiring Plus all of my teacher contacts that I've spoken with about this whole process have told me that there is always a second wave of hiring in August. I mentioned earlier on this thread, I was hired previously only a few days before school starts. I got the job on the spot, which was great. Good luck! You WILL find something!
There are still over 200 jobs in central Ohio alone. There is work out there. The trick is in finding the right match.
Thank you all SO much for the responses! I was overwhelmed with all the positive feedback and stories I read! It made me more hopeful that I can still find something this late! It's crunch time!
One year I was hired 2 weeks before the first day of workshops and I had to move 4 hours away in that time too.
I was just hired. First teacher day is next Monday, students start the Monday after that. A week ago, I hadn't even interviewed for this job yet. It can be done! Good luck!
Not too late! I started applying before I graduated in May. I applied for about 60 Sped and generalist (ec-6) jobs. I started getting calls for interviews in early July. I gave 6 interviews and was offered a job from the last one in the last week of July, after which I was offered four more interviews that I had to turn down. I know other teachers that were offered jobs as little as a week ago. Principles are still sorting out transfers and such, so don't get discouraged! You'll get something!
I feel like I should add that I also dropped my resume off in the offices of the schools where I applied and that got me a lot of pre-interview face time with principles.
These posts make me feel alot better! I hope our luck changes for those who are still looking for this year. I figure I would keep applying and dont give up untill the jobs run out then. But then the last resort are assistant/sub jobs, which I feel I should get on the ball with those if I want work at all.
School starts in a week and I was called yesterday, on a Sunday by the secretary of a principal of a high school asking me if I was still interested in a sped position they had open. I'd seen it but it was one I didn't apply too. I tried not to apply to many high school positions just because I prefer elementary with my experience and middle school a distant second. I was shocked she called on a Sunday. I know it's crunch time but wow.
My best friend has lined up two interviews this week. And the highest paying district in my county has two last minute openings. They haven't hired in many, many years!! (elementary at least)
My fiance was just hired as a reading teacher and we each had calls this week to interview for other positions. The jobs are still there, good luck!
I applied for a job a week ago, scheduled an interview on Wednesday, and interviewed and got hired on Thursday. School starts this Thursday. I also turned down 3 interviews today. Good luck to everyone still looking!
I got 11 calls within a 48 hour period 2 weeks ago and was hired that week. I had my pick of a few jobs and did not have to interview for all 11.
Woah!!! What a response in the past few days! I had a position but circumstances changed and I'm looking again. I hope those good vibes you're all all sending come my way and I can find something too! Good luck to all!
Here's my question though... How late is TOO late? Let's say you are already at a school but looking to switch to a new one. How long are you suppose to wait for interviews, meanwhile your current school and principal is in limbo and hoping you return? It's not really fair to put them in a bad spot either, having to get a teacher 5 days before school starts. I'm struggling with this right now. What's the usual procedure for this?
