We don't have a set number of minutes per week that we have to do any one subject like some places do... but I added it up just to see. How many minutes are you required to have? Math- 305 minutes Reading- 410 minutes (not counting word work) Writing/word work- 260 minutes Social Studies/Science- 150 minutes RECESS- 300 minutes!!! ---they go to library for 55 minutes, so I suppose that can also count as more reading, since she does guided reading type lessons with them.... she even does book club groups! I have sort of a funny schedule and because of our weekly assembly on Friday and Fun Friday (reward for kids who did well during the week/work finishing for kids who did not) I am basically at a 4 day week! (on Friday they have a little bit of math, guided reading and word work. Looking at it, it is a little shocking to think they are at recess more than they are at writing or ss/science!!! But I am glad that is the case, I strongly feel they need to be kids and will not take recess away from the class- however I do take it away from individuals who are not doing what they need to do! (I figure they have enough recess, that taking some away is ok. If they only had a ten minute recess or something, I wouldn't do that.)
Why the heck do you have an hour of recess every day?!?!?!?!?! We are required to have 30 minutes. On their gym day, they don't have recess, but 45 minutes of PE. I have: Math: 450 minutes Reading: 450 minutes Writing/Grammar/Spelling: 300 minutes Science: 160 minutes (sometimes only 120) Social Studies: 80 minutes- If I'm lucky Recess/PE: 165 minutes We are required to have the math, reading and LA times. Science and Social Studies is what is left.
Well we have a morning recess of 30 minutes and a lunch recess of 30 minutes... a lot of parents pick our school because of all the recess though. We also have a huge woods, so the kids are playing in the woods building forts and things like that, not running around on the blacktop. Anyway, I looked at the schedule and realized with the library time of 55 minutes I took guided reading out one day and replaced it with writer's workshop. So now I have 310 minutes of ww. You have a 90 minute math block and a 90 min lit block... whew!
Here's ours-- Language--500 minutes, Math-400 minutes Science/Social Studies (alternate)--200 minutes Visual Arts--100 minutes Phys Ed.--100 minutes Music--100 minutes guidance--50 minutes Computers--50 minutes Recess--350 minutes (30 minute recess and 40 minute lunch recess daily)
In a week we have: -450 minutes math -450 minutes reading, writing, language arts -240 minutes social studies -120 minutes PE -60 minutes art -120 minutes French -60 minutes science -60 minutes music -60 minutes computers -175 minutes recess None of this is set in stone; as long as we accomplish what we need to do the time frames are up to each of the classroom teachers. The only thing that is set are our specialist minutes.
Okay I'm not sure how accurate this is but... Reading 450 Writing 300 Math 300 Science/Social Studies 225 Lunch/Recess 175 Computers/PE/Music/Art/Library 175
Since I teach at a jr. high, our times are pretty set. Our kids get 200 minutes each of math, science, elective, PE, foreign language/study hall/ sped services, social studies, lunch/recess, and 400 minutes of LA. We have 40 minute periods. LA is a double-period block.
Holy Mackerel! How long are your days?? We also have 60 minutes of Spanish a week and 60 minutes of PE, but we also have 90 minutes more of PE, as they do swimming every other week for an hour and a half. I do 100 minutes a week with morning meeting too.
We start at 8:05 and the kids go at 2:35. We have 6 50-minute periods a day with a 30 minute recess and an hour for lunch. Beginning in grade 4, the students have 200 minutes/week of French. The hope is that at least half of science, social studies and art would be integrated--that frees up time. (I haven't added up the minutes, just went by the guidelines we were given the alst day of school).
We do a block type schedule so a week is: Reading- 300 mins Writing/LA-300 mins Science/Soc Stud/Health- 300 mins (alternate) Math- 300 mins Recess- 150 mins (plus a 45 min PE a week) Spelling- 100 mins
