I'm just curious to see what other kinders have. We have: Monday: 60 minutes (30 P.E., 30 library) Tuesday: 30 minutes (30 music) Wednesday: 30-60 minutes (30 P.E., 30 guidance every other week) Thursday: 60 minutes (30 music, 30 keyboarding) Friday: 45 minutes (art)
Monday - 105 minutes, I have 3 specials but one I have to stay with the kids Tuesday - 30 minutes Wednesday 45 minutes + 30 minutes once a month for guidance Thursday 30 minutes Friday 30 minutes I hate that Monday I have 3. I rather have more at the end of the week.
Sounds like your schedule is pretty similar to mine. And I agree with the Monday thing-that would stink. I love afternoon specials at the end of the week. It's like you all need it by then!
Mon-30 mins PE(plus 45 mins of comp lab but I have to supervise) Tues-30 mins Music Wed 60 mins PE, guidance Thurs-30 mins Music Fri-45 mins Library plus an extra 30 min recess to make up for Kindergarten getting shorted in PE and Music. I have to supervise so I don't always take it.
I work at a 1/2 day private kinder. We have - Monday - 30 mins computer Tuesday -30 mins art, 30 mins spanish Wednesday - 30 mins music (singing) Thursday - 30 mins violin Friday -45 mins P E I supervise art only.
Every elementary teacher in our school district has the same number of minutes of specials every day, 50 minutes. The kids rotate between art, music, and PE.
I have 45 minutes of P.E. every day. We also have 45 minute specials Tuesday-Friday (I must stay for these)--Library, Science Lab, Computer Lab, and Math Lab.
27 minutes each day for PE, they alternate days for music and computer for another 27 minutes. Library is every other week for 30 minutes (on the in-between weeks they just get new books with teacher supervision)
45 minutes each day 2 days for PE 1 music 1 art 1 computers We also do 45 extra minutes of PE throughout the week to meet the requirements for the state of Texas (135 minutes a week not including recess)
Our Kindergarteners have 45 minutes of P.E. on Monday and Friday, 45 minutes of Music on Tuesday and Thursday, 30 minutes of Tech and 30 minutes of Library once a week (it alternates what day).
25 minutes! It stinks! Our music/gym/art is back to back with our lunch...so 11:00-11:25 is specials and then 11:30-12:00 is lunch and then from 12:00-3:30 students are stuck in the room! It's awful! It makes for an extremely long afternoon! I'm going to ask our new principal to break it up for us next year! We're the only grade in the whole school that is this way! Sorry...vent over!
Oh that is tough for kinder! Our kinder goes 8 to 10:30 then they have lunch and recess. Then from 12:30 to 1:15 they have specials. Dismissal is at 3:00 so it works nicely for them.
Mon - Spanish 45 min. Tues - PE 45 min Weds - Art 45 min/Music 45 min/Health 45 min Thu - Drama 45 min Fri - None scheduled
Monday: zero Tuesday: zero Wednesday: zero Thursday: zero (unless you count 50 min when we take the kids to the library/computer lab and stay there with them) Friday: zero edit: I didn't realize this was on the kindergarten forum. But the kinder teachers at my school get zero as well.
I can't believe Texas has that much PE! I would LOVE for my kids to have PE daily. And the idea of having specials at the same time each day? Love it! Sarge, I can't believe you don't have any specials! Why is that?
Kindergarten at our school is half day. That could be it. K-3 have quite a bit of recess and they are covered by classified staff. 4-6 get P.E. and Music. I'm not really supposed to teach anything but Open Court Reading and math, so I guess having specials would cut into that.
(Southern VA) Everyday is 45 minutes (we rotate between library, music, guidance/spanish, and 2 gyms) One day a week is an extra spanish (15 minutes) and Art (45 minutes-which we are supposed to stay in the room and often have to help with).
Monday 60 minutes (PE and Music) Tuesday 75 minutes (Art and Library) Wednesday 60 minutes (Music and PE) Thursday 30 minutes (Music) Friday 30 minutes (PE) The first two Thursdays of the month we also have a 30 minute guidance lessons (if she shows).
I am soooo lucky at my school::wub: P.E. 3x per week for 35 minutes each Music 3x per week for 30 minutes each Art 1x per week for 40 minutes Spanish 2x per week for 20 minutes each Library 1x per week for 30 minutes On days I don't have PE, we have an extra recess for 15 minutes. Also, the teachers at my school never have to do recess duty. We have 4-5 playground 'coaches' at all times,
We actually have in our teacher's contract that each teacher will get 150 minutes of prep/week if it is a 5 day week. So we basically get 30 minutes a day. We also get 25 minutes of prep a day after school, but that is often taken up by meetings, conferences etc...We can actually file a greivance through our union if we don't get our 150 minutes/week.
Same with my school and I LOVE it! I had to do recess and lunchroom duty while I was subbing and I always dreaded those days. I do have bus duty, but it's after school and only two weeks out of the year. My first week is this coming week (only 2 days!), and I guess I just stand outside and make sure everyone gets on the buses. It only takes about 10 minutes.
Ours is also in our contract! If we don't get our prep time each day we can file for loss of prep and the district has to pay us for the lost time. I've never had to do this but some teachers in my school are filing because they didn't have PE one day this week due to some high school issues. I don't have recess duty, but I do have lunchroom duty. We also have bus duty a few times per year.
We don't have recess or lunch duty, but we have afterschool (bus, crossing guard, parking lot, playground) duty about one week out of every five. It's about half an hour each day for a week. I could really care less about the prep time. I wish that my students could have PE, art, or music taught by someone other than me.
When I taught in a public school the students had 40 minutes of specials each day. Now I'm at a Catholic school and I have 30 minutes 4 days a week.
30 minutes each, 4 specials. my schedule has me with 2 on Monday, One tuesday, none wednesday one thursday and none Friday. Wednesday...is a long day without specials. friday isn't so bad because we usually have fun Friday and do a fun activity at the end of the day.
I seriously can't imagine having no prep time! On Tuesday I just have 30 minutes in the afternoon (my shortest specials day) and it's such a long day!
Every teacher in my school has 50 minutes for their special prep period every day.It is broken up among PE,art, computer, music, guidance and science lab.
I get 40 minutes. Mondays and Thursdays are music. Tuesdays and Fridays are PE, and Wednesday is library.
Mon. - 9:30 Spanish 30 mins. Tues.- 9:00 Computer 30 mins. Wed. - 10:20 Chapel 30 mins. (I'm with them) Thurs.- 9:00 Music 30 mins. & 2:00 Library 30 mins. Fri. - 9:30 Art 40 mins. & 2:00 PE 30 mins. Recess 12:20 30 mins. every day. I'm with them on Mon. & aide is with them the rest of the week. I'd like to have the aide do something else with them on Fri. since they have to go right back out for PE.
I also teach in a half day setting (public school prek), and my kids get media once a week for 30 minutes. And our media specialist is trying her hardest to cut it down to 15, saying she can't keep their attention for any longer than that. My prep/planning time supposedly happens in the time between my sessions. I have 55 minutes, and 25 of that is supposed to be a "duty free lunch" as stipulated in my contract. So, I get that 30 minutes a day...except on days when the AM bus is late, or the PM bus is early, or a car-rider's parent is stuck in traffic, etc. If I added it up, without counting my lunch, I'd bet that I only get 15 minutes daily, at most. And, of course, there is the 55 minutes before school starts that we are required to be in the building, but 3 days a week, we have staff meetings/inservice trainings. And I'm on dismissal duty after school, or I'd have another 20 minutes then. Kim
Do your kids get to check out books? Our kinders have 30 minutes of library, and they split it up. For the first 15 they listen to a story, have some sort of lesson, or do an activity. For the last 15 they each get to check out 3 books (when they're done they sit and look at their books until the time is up). It seems to work out really well!
No, the media specialist doesn't even let them IN the library. She prefers to come to my room. Doesn't want them handling her books and getting them "all out of order" and "dirty." This is her first year as a school media specialist...last year she was a public librarian, so I told her to structure her weekly lessons just like she'd do a storytime for preschoolers at the public library - songs, stories, fingerplays, craft -and not to expect them to sit still for 30 straight minutes. She says the difference is (and this much is true) that at public library storytimes, each child has a parent/caregiver to maintain control, and she only had to "perform." In my classroom, it's just her and 20 4 year olds (I tend to leave and do things I can do out of the classroom, like return phone calls or file things ito my portfolios) Kim
