I'm curious to find out how long everyone has been teaching. You can include whatever teaching experience you think is relevant (i.e. work as a regular classroom teacher, sub, para/aide, tutor, whatever). I've been a high school teacher for 2 years; next year will be my third. I'm not going to count my year as a graduate assistant and two years as a college teacher because it wasn't full-time.
I just finished my first full year as the sole classroom teacher. Last year, I was hired mid-year as an aide and then took on teaching some subjects, and before that, I volunteered in my kids' classrooms, but I feel like this past year is what has really "counted."
This will be year #20, I taught Middle school for the first three and then High School and Middle school combined for the last 17. I have always taught History, but over the years I have taught English (various times), Spanish (I and II), and Algebra I. This is my 2nd year as the department chair of the SS department, I teach at a medium sized school that is low on teachers so I help out where I can.
08-09 will be year 4 for me. I spent my first year in a middle school and the past 2 years teaching high school.
I have been back in the classroom for 11 years after staying home for 13 years with the youngun's. Before that I had taught for 5 years.
I just completed my 13th year of teaching at two different schools. Two of those were as a media specialist, 1 as a seventh graded teacher (bless those of you who do this!), and the rest have been with my ever-interesting sixth graders. History, the entire time I've been in a classroom.
I am 3 weeks away from finishing my 7th year. Before that, I had a long-term assignment for 1 year and was a day-to-day sub for a year.
I taught pre-K for one year, subbed full time for three years, was an aide for four years, and now I have had my own classroom for two years.
I began in 78. So about 30. All in elementary but my first year (taught math in the middle school). Except for the Fla heat in Aug. I still love it.
I have been teaching 2 1/2 years in 4th and 5th grade. I also substituted for 2 1/2 years while I was in college, so all together, 5 years.
subbing 2 year interpreter/education assistant 4 year half time teacher 1 year multi-age self contained deaf ed 2 year fifth grade 1 year first grade 2 years Total 12
Four years as a special ed tutor (full time, so it counts) Two years as a resource room teacher (still special ed) Just finished first year as a 4th grade teacher! I love it!
08-09 will be my first year and I'm VERY excited. Not really sure what to do first since I haven't seen the curriculum or the classroom yet. Guess I'll have to wait...

I am just finishing up on my 11th year. - I did 7 years as a special ed. consultant for both the public and catholic school districts and for special needs preschoolers whose program was getting educational funding - I am on my 4th year as a self-contained special ed. teacher * I also did 3 years (could be more...it was so long ago :lol as a teacher's aide working 1-on-1 with students in early childhood programs and in kg.
I subbed for 6 months or so last year, and then got a long term position for a year, so I just finished up my first year actually teaching the same class all year. Still looking for a contract!
