I'm just curious how long you all take on teaching each word family to students. I have first graders and we follow a word study notebook where they sort pictures by beginning consonants and then by word family. We did all beginning consonants and are now approaching word families. I want to take this week to do rhyming before jumping in and then do word families next week. So basically in all I'm just wondering how much time you spend on each. Very much appreciated!!!!!
It just depends on how quickly they catch on. Once you begin, you will see how long it takes them to get a family down. I would start with one word family a week, then see if that is too slow. You will want to review each week also. Keep reviewing all the word families along with the current word family regularly..
I only taught 1st for one year, so let's see if I can remember: I believe I only spent one week on each word family. However, I did some sort of "spiral review" every couple of weeks to make certain that they didn't forget anything. Periodic review is oh-so-important when teaching word families!!!
I agree that you will have to see what the kids can handle. One thing to consider is if they have learned about word families in kindergarten. I teach one a week in kindergarten, but most years the kids can handle them faster after a few weeks and they understand the idea of a word pattern and making words.
We do 2 a week, but we are constantly reviewing/referring back to previous word families. (This is in 1st.) When spring hits the kids could handle them even faster, I think, bu we still do just 2 a week.
