Would you be willing to share your fifth graders' schedule? Right now we have five teachers who teach five different subjects for the same time each. We're thinking about wanting to change that up to where Reading and Math could get a bit more time (if possible.) So...I'm looking to see what other schools are doing. Thanks for any information!

We are in a middle school setting so we switch classes. All the fifth grade teachers teach LA and then we all specialize in something else. I have math. So, I teach 40 min blocks of math (periods 1, 2, and 6) I also have activity period (which is the biggest waste of time on Earth) 40 minutes of play time basically. And then periods 7/8 are LA. While I teach math the other teachers teach Science and SS.

I have 90 min of rdg/lang arts currently daily, but next year it will be 120 minutes. I spend 60-70 min on math, and 45 on science/ss (I switch out unit by unit).

    Four teachers

    Four 70 minute blocks

    1. Math and Calendar Math
    2. Science and Social Studies
    3. Reading and Library
    4. Writing and Grammar

The reading teacher takes them to the library once a week. We meet to collaborate once a week. For example, the writing teacher (me) is teaching about plot lines and the narrative structure and sentence construction. The reading teacher has the teacher using plot lines to deconstruct stories and has them write various types of sentences when responding. The SS teacher is reading a book ... etc.

I teach Reading/Spelling and Language to both classes( 45 minutes each class per day) as well as Science and Religion to my homeroom. Those are also 45 mins. each day. They have a special each day and study hall at the end of the day (5 days unless they are in band/or chorus). I don't like that Reading and Spelling is one grade- spelling pads their grade quite a bit. This is my first year in 5th at this school and I'm a bit nervous but also excited.

We departmentalized since my last post in this thread. Soooo......
We have a 60 minute reading/writing enrichment block
The other classes are 70 or 85 minutes long depending on whether or not they have specials. Three classes: reading/writing, math, science/social studies.
