    We do number grades (1-4). We have rubrics to follow, but the numbers typically mean:

    1 = Child does not do/understand task/concept
    2 = Child can do/understand with teacher assistance
    3 = Child can do/understand independently
    4 = Child exceeds expectations beyond grade level

    Our kindergarten program is a 2-year continuum--Junior Kindergarten and Senior Kindergarten. Report cards indicate where students are in terms of approaching or meeting expectations. Much is anecdotal and, particularly in JK, the report card goes hand-in-hand with a parental observation visit.

    The kindergarten report card has 3 grades:

    "P" - Proficient
    "W" - Working towards proficiency
    "L" - Limited Proficiency

    We are doing to a 1-4 format for K-2. 1st and 2nd grades have been using letters and numbers. The fear from one of the 1st grade teachers is the flake she will get from parents who had A students because they earned As on grade level work but aren't really above grade level so they won't be getting 4s on their reprt cards. We'll see how it goes.
