I've been in a conversation at school and say, "My friend in New York, or wherever says that...."

Well, a teacher called me on it the other day and said in a catty fashion, "Wel, just how do you know anyone from New York?"

I replied, "From all my friends at A to Z forum."

She kinda rolled her eys, but it's her problem.

Just wondering if anyone else ever refers to sanyone here in conversation?

I guess I should just say, "My expert advice comes from the Internet."

"A teacher I know from (place)"
    "A teacher friend from (place)"

If I am asked how I know you, I say that we "met" through an on-line discussion forum for teachers.

"A teacher on my teacher discussion board"

Most people now know what I am referring to. I try not to give the name out unless they put me on the spot- I want to be as private as possible!

    If it's something general I'll say, "I read online that . . . ."

    If it's something specific I'll say, "Someone I know from another (school/state/city) said . . . . "

I'm sure someone will ask me how I know teachers from all over, but for now I just refer to you all as "my teacher friend in Florida says..."
I feel like I know more about what's going on in the world of education because of all of you.:thanks:

Good question! I usually say a teacher friend, or a teacher I met once. If I'm referring to someone to whom I'm particularly close to, I might fib a little and say someone I know from college :D

I just say "a friend of mine" too or a "friend who works in California" if I'm specifically referring to something done differently in another state.

You could have met someone through a friend or gone to high school or college somewhere else. I think it's rude for her to have questioned you like that.

Just today I mentioned you all by saying someone on my teacher forum said....I agree with a previous poster who said they have learned a lot from all their friends here. I have too. I can't imagine not coming here for support and advice. I relate to so much of what you all go through. We are friends. Simple as that. From now on I will just refer to you all as a friend of mine.

I refer to y'all as "my friend in ____________". Since I relocated, I don't get asked questions. If they were to ask, I'd say we went to college together- since I have told them jobs in Michigan are not existent. Plus, they I do talk about a few specific friends who really are from college and relocated to VA and AZ.

    A teacher from ______.

I have only been on A to Z since the summer and I think I hesitate to refer to people as my friends because I don't know if I am considered a friend. Does that make sense? Some of you clearly "know" each other very well. You remember things about each others lives. I think I "know" a few members that way (paying attention to their shared lives here), but I don't know if anyone "knows" me that way. So I guess I feel funny about referring to someone as my friend, when I don't know if I really am.

Right now I say "other teachers."

For example, when I asked the "Why?" sentence question in another thread, I told my CT that "I asked other teachers this question, and it was debatable with them as well."

I have also become friendly with a teacher I met on this site. We talk on the telephone from time to time and email notes and jokes back and forth. My kids tease me when I refer to her as my "friend," saying that I must have signed up for Match.com, etc. But I don't care, it's so nice to have a long distance friend to laugh, cry and share with!:)

I try to keep this forum to myself as well! I don't want others at my school to get suspicious and start checking my posts. I like this place as a separate community away from my coworkers.
