It's really early in the year, but I have a student (3rd grade) who is not completing work. The problem is, I feel there are some definite distraction issues (perhaps on the ADD scale) but I also feel there is some just ;choosing not to work' going on as well as SOME academic challenges. So, my initial response is to keep redirecting, offer help, etc, but I suspect this student is motivated NOT to work in order to get that extra attention, so I want to give attention and help when needed and I am trying to offer more praise and attention for being ON task, but that is sometimes challenging...and sometimes backfires when the student is on task, I mention it positively and that takes the student off task. Ideas appreciated.
