Call students up individuallly? Collect it and check it during your free periods?
I check that it was completed during morning work or snack time. Some gets corrected as a class, some I collect and check.
I use a hanging shoe holder as my HW holder. Each student is assigned a pocket. I retrieve the papers at the beginning of school or on my prep. I mark all HW and usually put some type of comment on it. Students do their spelling homework in composition notebooks which are due on Fridays. I try to get them marked during the week if they are handed in early. What HW I don't get to during the day I bring home at night to mark.

I teach second grade and don't give much homework. It's usually a page of Math problems about 2 - 3 times a week. I collect it in the morning and we check it together during Math.

My homework is a reading one tradebook weekly, drill and practice math, and spelling words/sentneces handwriting.
Checking...I only grade on completion with solid effort. I look it over well, add to Skyward, and recycle.
They put their hw in a letter tray.
If they did not complete the hw, they fill out a slip saying so and put that in place of the hw. It actually has 2 sections, one for in place of the homework, and one for them to take home. They have to fill it all out (which they HATE) and I just sign both.
I walk around or call up during warm up. Can get everything graded and back before warm up is over.

My kids put their homework in the homework basket. I check for completion during morning recess or during my lunch hour.

Students are required to check in with me as part of their morning routine. They copy tonight's homework in an agenda and bring it to me to check along with last night's homework. Most assignments are written on loosefeaf paper in a folder. I look at it check it and give any necessary feedback. Takes only a few seconds. It stays in their folder until I need to refresh the paper in there. If it is a worksheet, like for math, they bring it to me when they check in. If it is something I can check quick, I do, and give general feed back. I will check it more completely later and it goes home with their other work once a week.
