Hello everyone, sorry, I haven't been on the site in a long time. I just finished my Master's in ECE and since there are no positions available right now, I got nominated to sub at 2 different NYC Public Schools. This is a great way to get my foot in the door. Did anyone start as a sub and got offered a teaching position? Can I be nominated by more than one school?

Also, how do I report to the school to sub? Will someone call me the day of or the night before? Will all schools in NYC have me on the list to sub? Can I deny a school? Do I get a file number when I start subbing?

Sorry for all the questions. I'm curious  Thanks so much!!

    Hi,

I'm a substitute teacher in NYC and am happy to answer any questions you have.

You do not need to be nominated by more than one school. Once a school has nominated you, you will receive an e-mail with a certificate that includes your file number and a link to continue the process. There will be a number of appointment times to select from to meet with the Department of Education. You go in on that day to fill out paperwork, get fingerprinted, and have someone give you the rundown on how SubCentral works.

When you fill out the paperwork, you select the districts you would like to substitute teach in. This means any school from that district can call you through the SubCentral calling system. I have found that some schools use SubCentral and others do not, so you should absolutely drop off your resume in person to your top schools.

When a school calls via SubCentral, you can turn down the offer by selecting from a list of reasons. If you get a call directly from a secretary, you can also turn down the assignment. It is expected that you cannot say yes to every offer because as substitute teachers, we get called by a number schools and our availability changes day-to-day. Try to give priority to your favorite schools but be open to subbing in different places to guarantee work.

Hello, thank you for responding. I received an email/invitation to the sub teacher processing event in Brooklyn and scheduled an appt. I did not receive a certificate with a file number. Do I get this at the event? I read that I have to take a 20 hour class on Sub Hub, is this true? Is Sub Hub now called SubCentral or is it something different? Thanks so much for your help!

I apologize for the incorrect information; you do not receive your file number in the initial e-mail. I just checked through my e-mails (using a different filter) and realized I received it with the printable certificate AFTER the DOE appointment. One thing to double-check: does the event say Fast-Track? This skips the "training" portion that you read about. You are eligible for Fast-Track because of your certification.

I'm pretty sure SubCentral is just the new "SubHub." There is no class for it. The class you're thinking of would be the training for uncertified teachers but as mentioned above, you don't need that.

A friend of mine recently became a substitute teacher and they did not have her down as Fast-Track, even though she should have been. Definitely check your e-mail to make sure of that.

    SUBSTITUE TEACHER ORIENTATION

    Hi
I have just received a nomination for the substitute application in the NYCDOE and I am now qualified for an interview and orientation session on Feb 4th. I was wondering if anyone in the past year or so has attended this orientation, and I wanted to know what kind of questions do they ask at this event and in the interview process, and if someone could tell me the writing samples they offered as well! Thank you !!

Yayyyy I got my sub license today!!! Thanks CrayolaCrayon for all your help. Subbyteacher does your invitation say "fast-track"? Are you certified? If so then you ship the training and interviewing part. Today I just filled out alot of paperwork and there was a little meeting on how to register for Subcentral. Then you take your pic for your id. Everyone is different depending on their fulfilled requirements though.

Quick silly question for those who know: I got my sub teacher id card and the top of my card is blue and it says NYC DOE with the emblem in the middle. I could have sworn that I saw others that had yellow on the top of their sub teach id cards. What color is your sub id card? I am just so paranoid, I hope they did not give me the wrong one.

    You're welcome!

I am sure they gave you the correct card, so don't even worry about that. I have yet to use my DOE ID. When you sub at a school, the security guard will usually ask for a drivers license or other ID. I just hand over my drivers license because it's the first thing in my wallet.

Tip: make sure you have your file number on top of your resume when you start dropping them off. That's the first thing many secretaries looked for.

HI! Soon to be sub over here! How long does the process take for a certified teacher? I received my nomination yesterday and put it my online application this morning. What now? How long for the application to be reviewed? When do I get an appt? How long after my appt can I sub? Patience, patience, I have none. :(

TeacherDF, congratulations on the nomination! They aren't easy to come by. Your appointment date will probably be in a week or two, followed by another week to 10 days of processing your information.

I live and Sub in CT. I never understood why New York subs have to be certified. In most other states including Connecticut you just need a bachelors in any field some just an associates or a certain number of college credits. If you are certified in teaching wouldn't you just take a full-time teaching job over subbing?

It seems like you have to jump through hoops and walk through fire to become a sub in New York City!! :eek:hmy:

"written assessment, oral evaluation and submission of said required forms and documents"

"Proof of completion of EdTraining Center (SubHub) online teacher training program
Proof of completion of the Child Abuse and School Violence Prevention Workshops
Proof of passing results or registration for the New York State Liberal Arts and Science Test" --taken from NYC department of education site.

I know the pay is higher but are they giving you benefits and summer pay for all this? All I had to do was show a copy of my transcript and pass a background check.

Hello, since I'am a certified teacher, it was pretty quick and easy for me to become a sub. However, if you are not certified, you have to do a whole lot more. Only as a para you get benefits and summer pay, not as a sub. I would def take a full time job over subbing however it is not that easy since there is a hiring freeze in some subjects so subbing until then subbing is perfectly fine for me.

Hi! I just have a quick question, is there a way to get nominated for the city if you do not know any principals?

    substituting nyc

I recently was nominated for a substitute position in a nyc school. How long does it take to process my application so I can begin in the school. I heard 2 weeks as long as all certifications, application requirements and school requirements were met by all sides. Anyone know the time frame? Also does anyone know if the "Fast Track" is indeed faster?
