I want the students to learn about the different parts of an insect by building one using pipe cleaners and 3 fuzzy balls. I saw it done once a long time ago and can't remember how to put it together. Any ideas?

While spiders are cute, they aren't insects.

I personally avoid making anything with pom pom (fuzzy balls) because they don't really stay together when you use white glue, and using hot glue isn't advisable or practical when working with children.

I'd also worry that using round pom poms would lead the children to think that the head, thorax, and abdomen are all round, and that isn't accurate.

is a more accruate representation of an insect.

Now if you are just trying to make a craftsy "bug" then by all means, use round pom poms. But if you are trying to educate students on the three body parts of an insect, I'd stick to something more realistic.

I do the styrofoam balls. Everyone can see the three body parts and attach the legs correctly (none coming from the head). I bought a rectangle of green foam ($4-5) and they stuck their bugs on it to display in the hall. Added a little Easter grass and it looked like a square of grass from outside.

Did any of these sites show the egg carton type where you use the three sections of egg carton and stick the pipe cleaners through?
