Just wanted to know how everybody's first day went (if you've already had it). Mine went okay...hectic and I'm gonna have a challenging class this year. I had to send a couple of students to the "chill out" table because they just would not listen and I usually never do that on the first day but I had no choice.

Anyways, hope you all had a good day!:)

I too had a couple students that needed a chill pill, and I sure do hope that I can break them in and that these habits won't last all year. I also realized that having inclusion in my room this year is going to be harder than I thought. The one i have full-time needs his own personal parapro. It was rough but we'll handle it.

    Pretty good!!

My day actually went very well!! I'm so glad it's over, and there is no school today due to tropical storm FAY....
I had no cryers, really nice parents, and a class full of adorable five year olds! They really were good, I hope I'm not jinxing myself by saying that. I read the book "kevin knows the rules" and practiced and practiced and modeled and modeled the rules and procedures. Every so often we would go back to the poster for a reminder of how kevin follows the rules.
Pick up even went well, I didn't even have a panic attack!

Wow lilygirl, sounds like the perfect day (knock on wood). I hope the same happens for me next week. Let us know if it stays this great!
Good luck to everyone with difficult kids...nip it in the bud early! :)

    Not bad

I actually had a good day. We did staggered entrance, so I only had 7 kids today but all 21 will be there tomorrow. The ones I have met so far are good and well behaved. The only problem I had was that I didn't have enough things to do for them. I had a list of activitites, but it wasn't enough. The day seemed so long too. Our lunch got pushed back by 30 minutes and makes it seem even longer. I'm tired but so far so good.

I am coming down from teaching 5th grade for 6 years, so my first day was ok, but I felt like I was trying to herd a bunch of cats! Anyway, by Friday we were doing group rotations at center time. My class is a good one, with the exception of a couple of kiddos who are still learning how to behave in school.
My class knows that if they push/mess around in line, that we WILL have to "start over". We were at the cafeteria ready for lunch, when a couple of boys began pushing and playing around. They knocked over a couple of other students, so I said "Well, class, I guess we have to practice how to act in line. We have to start over." We walked all the way back to the classroom and reviewed how to be in line. The kids were not happy because they were no longer first in line for lunch. Now, I never have anyone out of line, because they tell eachother "stop it, we don't want to start over!". =)
So, Monday was a learning experience for me and by Friday I was loving it. =)

My first day... oh my... well... it was challenging. I have four students who have special needs and five who do not. Sounds easy, eh? A little more difficult than it appears... I am in my second week and am very tired... it doesn't help when parents already feel like you haven't done enough...

Well I survived day one. It was hectic but everyone came, ate, played outside, had snack, and then got home! What more can you ask for?

The day went well, one student is a challenge, but they are very good over all. I am excited for the year and to see what they can accomplish. Many seem to know more than the kids from last year (I have a lot from the ECC in our district), so I expect them to really do well!

Holy yowzas! I had forgotten what it was like to be in Kindergarten on the first day. I loop up to first with my kids, so by the time I go back to Kindergarten I have completely blocked out how hectic it can be. I also forgot how they don't realize they can't just yell out, get out of their seats, walk in line, yadda, yadda, yadda. I asked my mom when I picked up my son today what the heck was I thinking ever wanting to teach Kindergarten. She reminded me that I love it...duh! Seriously though, I will just be a harda*$ until I break them in.

Oh, and my new aide is a bit ditzy...very sweet, but ditzy. I left her a list of things to do when she was in my room today...she didn't completely finish anything that I asked. We asked her to make a ten page booklet for each K class...she made ten booklets instead of 100 ten page booklets :) Since I can be kind of ditzy myself, I'll just take it all in stride ;)

    first day

Yikes, today was a nightmare. We have enrolled more children then we ever have and the school remodeled the bathrooms over the summer, without considering the preschool children. I had one boy sit on the urinal to pee (he had never seen one before), one girl got locked in a bathroom stall because they put full doors on them and she screamed her head off, and 2 totally defiant boys who even refused to eat or sit at the tables. I know it will get easier, but we were 20 minutes late for lunch today and nap was an hour late due to the chaos of having sooo many kids and crazy bathroom issues. The counters are to tall, they can't reach the paper towels and the have individual soap dispenser sitting everywhere that kids love to just squirt. We have never had 3 year olds before and that also caused a lot more work (zipping, snapping, etc.)

Oh well tomorrow is a new day. They also gave me a new child at the end of this crazy day.

Sorry to grumble, but i will be excited in a few weeks after i get some of them trained.

skerns... I really have to say that I am sorry for your day. I thought mine was tough, but yours I think is the big winner !! Things will get better - you sound like you really have your priorities in order !!

I had such a relief the first day. One kid who had totally shut down during admissions testing did GREAT-- and has ever since. We told his mother to try to involve him in as many group activities as possible-- Sunday School, camp, whatever-- and whatever she did, it worked. So thank God for that!!

This is my second year. This group is so much calmer than last year's bunch. I mean, if I pause to help a kid for a minute, complete pandemonium does not break out!! How amazing!! Now I just get to laugh at the first grade teachers' amazement. :D

    terrible!

My first day (yesterday) was terrible! Not only was it my first day teaching ever (just out of college) but I have 27 Kindergartens in my class... well I actually have 29 but two of them haven't been showing up - and of course we're expecting more after labor day! There's been some wonderful specialists in my class this week, but they're going to have to start teaching their respective classes soon, and then I'll just be alone with all of them. I really don't think I can keep the kids quiet - yesterday I came home just crying my eyes out because it was so terrible. Does it get better?

    first day

Yeah, it gets better. Today was day two and of course it was alittle better. Be firm and stick to your discipline plan and it will start getting under control. It takes a few weeks though. Good Luck

elysiansmiles, I have never had that many kids, but even with half that many, you have to be Gestapo-like with discipline, especially the first few days-- if you are, the rest of your year will be SOOOO much easier. The key is to do it with joy!!
