Mine is from Gordon Korman's MacDonald Hall series. Miss Scrimmage runs the finishing school for ladies, which is across the highway from the all-boys boarding school, MacDonald Hall. I loved these books in middle school and when I re-read them, they are still really funny. I don't think I'm at all like zany Miss Scrimmage, but I love her character.
It's been the more-or-less universal internet handle of my adult life. To give greater background, I am the sort that truly does love to road trip through random old highways and roads to little towns.
When I taught high school 25 years ago, there were always some random names on the absentee list. One was “Student, Ima”. I remembered that and chose “Ima Teacher” when I first started on teacher rooms. I am Ima Teacher on every chat room I frequent now or have ever visited.
One of my coworkers at the last school I taught at in my hometown started calling me a "child whisperer" because my class was just so good. So smart, well-behaved, kind, helpful, just all around amazing angels. ANGELS, I TELL YA. I really can't take all the credit though. I just got really lucky that year with an amazing group of kids. I joined this forum right after that class I think. I have to look at dates.
Could be geometry or geography so it's not a dead giveaway. Heck, possibly even geology (earth science...) Anyway mine is loosely based on my initials.
I chose Joyful! because I choose to find the joy in teaching year after year despite the challenges. I feel joyful that I have been so blessed!
I thought it was about the most common name I could think of... in hindsight, I might have picked John Smith.
One of my largest goals each year is to help children fall in love with reading. I still believe that books can lead us to so many wonderful places. That is how I decided the name readingrules. The number 12 was fairly random.
I figured out it would help my students if I said my name rhymes with Camel and 13 is the year I got married.
I was 14 when I fell in love with the idea of studying English Literature as a career. My English teachers in high school used to love my writing, and they used to call me "Little Shakespeare." It stuck with me all these years.
"a person's final public performance or professional activity before retirement." Trouble is...I keep retiring and going back!
In college my best friend used to sing the song "lisa bisa bo bisa me my mo misa..." She didn't find out till later that my mom had been calling me Lisabobisa since I was a child. I guess that's part of why we were best friends!
When I created mine back in early 2014, I was searching online for tips on how to become a teacher and just so happened across these forums. I decided that I would create a username and entered futuremathteacher as I was just entering my foray into teaching. However, I received a notice that that username was already taken, I believe, and so I substituted “prof” for teacher and added an “s” after math. The rest is history.
Same - mine starts with M. XD My students actually do call me Miss M, so it’s also become my “teacher persona” and I can’t imagine what it’ll be like if I get married and I’m not Miss M anymore! (Though this year I hear more “maestra” than “Miss M.”)
When I first joined the forum over a decade ago, I was a young (third year) teacher, hence the name YoungTeacherGuy. Not sure what I was thinking when I chose it (I could've come up with something better), but I'm stuck with it now.
Actually, I find that I quite enjoy my life working, although I do look forward to cutting back a little next semester.
I was thinking about when you have a top notch pilot they call them an "Ace" but that wasn't an approved nick (too short). So I just added an s. Which I was thinking about some video game series with that line of thinking.
My story is super lame. It was my first year of teaching and not only had my college program been a dual cert program that focused 90% on gen ed, but I was also the only sped teacher at my school and was assigned a gen ed mentor. I didn't realize teacher forums existed and happened upon this place in a google search. I was so excited to have a place to ask my questions and just wanted to quickly get through the whole registration deal so I could start posting. My desk calendar had a picture of a waterfall on it; I basically just glanced down and saw it and decided that would do!
As long as you enjoy what you’re doing, then do whatever. I just interpreted your unhappy face emoticon as you having to exit retirement unwillingly.
It's going to be like the boy who cried wolf next time. "Didn't we just throw swansong 1 a retirement party? We're having another one???"
I have actually turned in my resignation because we are moving in Dec.out of this town to our new home near the beach. So, I'll quit the school I am in when we move. I do plan to get another job, but not in teaching.
