Hi everyone. I'm a 3rd grade first year teacher at a Catholic school. I just got my license to teach in another state to close the gap in my long distance relationship.

To apply to be a public school teacher in this new state, you must first make a general online application. The problem is that this application asks for three references that are automatically emailed and notified as soon as you hit submit. The current/last principal must be one of the references.

I feel really uncomfortable with notifying my current principal before I have another job in mind. We have a good relationship but I just feel it is too early to have this discussion with her. Should I just be honest? What would you do or say? Thank you.

While timelines may vary from place to place, my school district is right in the thick of planning for next year. We found out this week what we will be tentatively teaching next year and schools that will be hiring have posted their positions. I don't think it's too early to have the conversation with your P; I can't imagine a P not being supportive of your reasons for making a change.

I understand this is a scary conversation to have, but you actually have a perfect excuse to be looking for other work. Just "rip the bandaid off" and ask if you can speak with your principal. Explain exactly what you typed here, let him/her know nothing is for sure and you are only considering your options, but that you want to be upfront about your situation. Your school will most likely appreciate your honesty.

I’ve been in a similar situation. You do need to be honest, the sooner the better. Start with conversation with how well your current situation is except for the fact that you want to be closer to the other person in your relationship. Let the principal know that if things don’t work out on this job hunt you want to stay. I, at least found, that being open and honest left no hurt feelings.

Be honest with him/her, and just let them know why you're looking. I'm sure they'll understand. MrsC is correct, you need to do it sooner rather than later so that your school has enough time to find suitable replacements. Hiring process is lengthy and you don't want to leave them scrambling.

Thank you for all of your advice, everyone. I spoke with my principal this morning and told her the honest truth. I said that this was not a for sure thing, but that I was going to start applying. She was very supportive and understanding.
