Im a 3rd year 2nd grade teacher and this class has been my worst. The first 1/3rd of the year wasn't perfect but my students were learning and making progress. Around a month ago something shifted and things have spiraled out of control. My students are fighting every day and no longer listen to me at all. I spend most of my day keeping students from hurting each other. I've read so many articles and classroom management books. I've tried so many things including lessons on resolving conflicts, using manners, and respecting classmates. I've tried starting over like it's the first day. I know it all stems from their lack of respect for me. Ive made so many mistakes and I don't know what else to try. Parents are getting sick of me calling but all everyone keeps telling me to do is to keep calling.
I hate to say it, but the change in behavior should be expected. Maybe consider beginning give out a silent lunch for students who misbehavior. If that is not your cup of tea, do consider the following... -Write F U N F R I D A Y on the board -When the class (or the majority of your class) is MISBEHAVING, erase one letter. -On Friday, students will be given free time (if letters are on the board). Maybe 2 minutes of free time added on Friday per letter still present OR all letters erased=no Fun Friday In the past, I have used a Red/Green Flip card system. Very easy for students to follow.
The main thing is to be consistent. Share what you want to change. Be specific on what they should do and what will happen if they're not making good choices. I like Teacher234's idea of writing F U N F R I D A Y on the board and using some sort of warning and consequences system, like a color change system.
