My current one has about 3,000 students and 413 staff members. I'm considering another district which has over 13,600 enrolled with 977 teachers. I know almost everyone in the district, my two kids went here K-12 and I've been here forever.

Am I going to feel lost in the crowd?

The one I just got the job with is considered mid-size in the state and is around 30,000.

I grew up in a small district, 1 elem, 1 middle, 1 high school. My first two years teaching, I taught in huge districts with 5-6 elem, 2 intermediates, 2 MS, and 1 high school. The town I'm in now (and trying to get a job in) is the same size as the district I grew up in; however, it has 5 elem, 2 MS, and 1 high school.

My district is tiny. We have three elementary schools that feed into one junior high. I teach at the junior high, where we have approximately 600 students each year. The high school is a separate school district.

There are about 300,000 students in our district. I think there are around 40,000 staff, including teachers.

Last I heard, my district was the fifth largest in the nation.

I live in a small district, 4 ele, 1 grade 6and 7, 1 grade 8 an 9, and 1 high school. The district I work in is big for my state. We have over 68,000 students. I know the people at my school and you run into people all the time taking classes. There are advantages to big districts. We have lots of classes to take, insurance is lower, and there are more services for the students.

we live in a medium sized district with 35,000 students and around 1,500 teachers. The big district around here is Dallas ISD which has around 150,000 students. I'm not sure how many teachers DISD has.

Wow well, I feel tiny. I work in a small district... 3 elementary schools, and just 1 middle school/high school combo building. The high school has a little over 400 students.

We have 2 Prekto12 schools that are really tiny. Other than those, we have 3 elementary, 1 middle, and 1 high. My school is a Prek to 6 school with just over 500 kids.

27 schools in total: 17 K-5/6, 1 K-8, 4 MS, 3 Comprehensive HS, 2 Alternative HS. We have around 21,000 students and 1,000 teachers, though those numbers are from a couple of years ago, and with RIFs that may be lower at the moment. One of our K-5 schools - the one my DD went to, in fact - has become a conversion charter and will open this fall with about 400 students.

My district has 33 schools. I also used to work for another that had only 4 schools. Don't k now which one I like better.

You definitely get a couple more little extras at tiny districts, such as $5 gift card at Christmas & a couple other small things. :D

I'm thinking Cassie is in the same district as me. We are just over 300,000 students and (from the old numbers I found) about 30,000 staff, though I'm sure it has went up from the original number.

I can say that I don't feel lost but that may be because this is the only district I've ever know aside from the tiny one I went to as a child. Our school is tight knit and everyone is very friendly. It never occured to me that in some places it is common to feel that way with your whole district. It is hard to say if you'll feel lost. If you are used to alot of activites with your entire district, that may feel lacking in a larger district. If you are happy with just a close knit school, then I'd say you can find that no matter how big the district.

I'm amazed at the size of some of these districts. In my state, we did some consolidation a couple of years ago because we had so many small districts. It'd save even more money if they did more consolidating.

I'm thinking a staff of 977 isn't that large after all.

We are 7th in the nation, largest in Texas. 200,000 students and 12, 000 teachers, over 200 elementary schools. I know it would probably be a hard transition, but you still can get to know other teachers through professional development or meetings. There is probably more red tape in some circumstances too, but overall I have no complaints. Oh, and your district is in the news a lot more because it's a bigger target, but you get used to that too.

My current district (been with 15 yrs) has 2 elementaries, 2 middle schools and one high school with a total student population of about 1,600. Right now we have about 100 teachers. The district I worked out before was about 3x the size. I really enjoy working at a smaller district.

My SCHOOL has a teaching staff of over 100, so I'm thinking that a district of that size isn't all that large.

About the same as you. We have over 30,000 and have 43 schools. Not sure of the teacher number.

I'm not sure how many teachers DISD has either but I know it is less than a year ago. I feel so sorry for them.

My district has 46,000 students, a huge bureaucracy that is incompetent at the district level, and it's a nightmare. My dream is that it splits up into 4 more manageable-sized districts.

We are also a one building school district. there are about 285 students in grades pre-K through 8. The funny things is, we are in a very urban area. Somehow the district lines fell funny and this district covers the kids who weren't covered by other districts.

We have 23 teachers and 7 administrators--figure that one out!

MrsC- Most of us think we should actually just be merged with another district that is close by. I'm not really sure why this hasn't happened.

dfleming- I might be a little biased (and cranky), but it seems that they mostly sit around and continue conversations that took place at home. Most of them are related or somehow got the job because they are friends with so and so. But that might just be my jaded opinion.

If you lived where I do, that would be a small district! My district has 5 HS, 7 MS, and over 20 elementary schools. It's funny how districts vary from state to state!
