For the past 12 weeks, I have been as assistant coach for the Girls on the Run program at my school. The girls (in grades 3-5) and coaches, have been together after school, twice a week, for about an hour and a half. We have covered a curriculum focusing on self-esteem and positive choices, and, of course, running. This morning, we had our culminating 5k run. Our principal declared it "Girls on the Run" day at school and many classes came out to cheer us on. I was so proud of the girls--they made tremendous progress. Even our most reluctant runners finished in just over 40 minutes. So excited about my first 5k, and having the opportunity to celebrate with these girls!

How great for you and your students! :thumb: I think that's an awesome program! We're looking into implementing it next year. I'm glad to hear about the positive effects it can have.

It's so worth it, KinderCowgirl! Our head coach has been doing this for 7 years. Next year, we'll certainly do it again, and will most likely offer the program for girls in grades 6-8 as well.

My school has a GotR group too. They always ask teachers to do a practice 5k with the girls as a motivator, and I'm always happy to do it.

It kind of bothers me that my school does not offer any type of equivalent for the boys, though.

Great work! I was an assitant coach for GOTR when I student taught. Unfortunately I wanted to bring the program to my school and there was no chapter in our county. It costs $7000 to start one :(. It is a phenomenal program, good for you for volunteering your time!
