I keep hearing about this honeymoon stage - a brief period in the beginning of school where kids haven't started testing your limits yet. How long does this last? I want to know what I might be in for
It ends too soon! Once you get used to the feeling that "Wow, this is going to be a great year, they are soooooooo sweet"......the end is near....:haha:
I think it ended by the end of the first week with my fifth graders last year, but they were an unusually rough group who got comfortable way too quickly!
I got about a week or two for the whole class. A couple of kids "honeymooned" for a couple months. One in particular... WOW. A switch flipped one day!
I didn't experience it at all last year - the whole group were "over" it the first day!:lol::lol:
How true is this!!! My honeymoon period is usually over the first week-just about the time we start in on the academics and the "get to know you" stuff is over!!
I had such a honeymoon period with my 2nd grade class last year! After a few days, I was gushing about them so much, I thought I had the best class ever! I WAS WRONG!!! They turned out to be the WORST class ever! I will not elaborate because it was such a horrible experience but, a few were so bad that they were part of the reason I left the school because I did not have support from administration.
YUP! Honeymoon phase, what is that!? My kids start testing the minute they see me. They see this small, thin, young looking teacher and think, "Whooheee!" she looks like I can manipulate her! HA! Little do they know that I'm strict, firm, and NOT a pushover. THey learn..... Mwhahahahaha
It varies from year to year. I've had groups that honeymooned for a month and others that lasted only a day or two. I have one child this year who came right in with every aspect of his personality showing. I already know where his desk is being relocated and just how much constant attention he's going to need if he is to ever stay on task.
OPEN HOUSE!! OMG!! We just had a meet and greet; kids put stuff in desks, etc. Parents and kids (a few) are already under my skin Honeymoon??? not.
I know exactly what you mean now! I had open house last night too, and there's 4 or 5 kids (and parents) that stand out in my mind. I'm in for a ride LOL
OMG! The tattling is out of control! And it is all about one child, poor thing. I will need to work closely with him, but no one deserves 6 other kids constantly monitoring (and reporting) his every move. Three 1/2 days in and I'm ready to lay down the law on this one.
It's official- my honeymoon is over. It lasted 3 days. Not my worst, but last year's definitely lasted longer. How many days until Christmas break??????
My class is still in the honeymoon period. I don't think mine are going to leave it any time soon. I run a very tight classroom. Our new VP put me on cafeteria duty "because he needed someone strong" in there in the mornings. I just expect children to act appropriately and when they don't...well, they learn quickly how to act around me. This was not the case last year...ugh! Last year I never got a honeymoon period! It was also my first year of teaching. I learned A LOT last year!
Can I come observe you? My partner teacher is pretty firm, and I learn so much just by being out there with her at recess LOL
We're practically neighbors then! I live in the HEB area and commute to the Pleasant Grove section of Dallas.
