Just wondering how some of you grade homework or if you do at all? Do you just give a grade for completion? Thanks for the help.

Homework assignments will not receive a grade. Rather, if the homework assignment is completed, then the student will receive 100%. If the student began the assignment, but it is incomplete, it will receive a 50%. Missing and late homework assignments will receive a 0%.

This year I am trying something different. Everyone starts with 100. I will take three points off for each incomplete HW assignment in each subject. At the end of the quarter, I will put that grade in for a quiz grade. So, if you do all your homework, that is an easy 100 for a quiz grade in each subject.

At my school, we cannot take grades on homework. We grade it the next day together as a class to reinforce the lesson from the day before. If they don't do their homework, they miss recess and go to study hall.

Such a hot topic at our school! The principal finally stepped in and said outright, "You may not grade homework. If they don't do it, you may only take away 1/2 of their recess. You must go over it the next day. Students who don't do homework are to have their parents contacted." Then he seemed to suggest that homework be kept to a bare minimum.
I don't know what I think anymore since it's been such a touchy subject here. Each side makes good points. I seem to be continuing to give practice work in math and finish up any classwork you didn't complete at home. I've never graded it, and every year there's only one or two that struggle to get it in. Doesn't matter what you do recess-wise, they still can't get it together. This year it isn't a problem for some reason.
And I never grade it because half the time I'd be grading the parent's work.

I just track it with a check if they have it done and circle if they didn't do it. If they bring it in late then I will put a check in on top of the circle so I know that it was late but later completed. There are too many other things to average in the end for us that teach ALL subjects and this is MUCH easier and faster and at the end of the day you know who does it and who doesn't, it's always the same kids! l:) We all know that!! LOL!
