The best costume I ever made was for my daughter. She went as "Macaroni & Cheese". I bought an orange sweatshirt, styrofoam wreaths and orange and yellow spray paint. I cut the wreaths in half so they looked like the macaroni. Next I spray painted them orange and then when they dried I sprayed a little yellow on them to give them a two-tone effect. then I hot glued them all over the sweatshirt. she also wore a painter's cap that had the front of a Kraft Macaroni & Cheese box glued on.

Ohh, one of my favorite childhood memories is seeing my grandmother and mother work together on my halloween costume at the sewing machine.

    Here are my costume memories
    Kindergarden: Gene Simmons (from KISS)
    1st: Alien
    2nd: Hell's Angel
    3rd: Old man
    4th: Fisherman
5th: Raggedy Ann (my best friend was Andy)

I don't hv kids yet, but my mom used to make a few for me. Here's what I've been for Halloween:

pre-school - Jaws & 1 of those blown up plastic monsters on my head (long forgotten what it was called)

    kinder - ballerina

1st or 2nd - princess w/ tall pointy hat & gown (all pastel pink..my mom md this one)

I was a clown 1 yr (mom md that).

I was a cowgirl another yr.

    6th - I was a jack-in-the-box (mom that one).

7th - a pirate (this was the last yr I ever dresed up).

I made my sons' costumes for years....sweatshirts or long sleeved tees are great 'bases' on which to build costumes. They've been pirates, mummies, Mario and Luigi from Mario Bros, knight in shining armor, dinosaur....My 20 and 24 year old sons now make their own costumes. Last year, one was the 2nd amendment- he word a parchment colored tee shirt with a big #2 painted on it and fake fur 'sleeves'.....get it?
(the right to 'bear' arms). The other son went to a pirate party with a Pittsburgh Pirates hat and an eye patch. They are quite witty and hysterical.

My kids are too old for costumes but I always found the greatest ideas in Family Fun magazine. check out their website.
