2.5 years of subbing (3 long term positions included)
1 year in a Charter School
1/2 a year in Head Start

And I finally got a REAL interview in a PUBLIC SCHOOL... in OHIO!

I got the call yesterday morning... (which at first I thought was a really cruel April Fools Day joke) and I am interviewing for a Third Grade Job in an Excellent School District next FRIDAY!

My mentor (from my first year of teaching in a charter school) now works at this same elementary school where the job interview is for. I had emailed her when I saw the posting... but I had no clue she worked at the same school. I only knew she worked in the district.

It really IS all about connections! She won't say so... but I know she must have said something to the principal.

When I hung up the phone I fell to my knees and started crying.... I've hoped for just an interview for soooo long! I'm spending all of next week brushing up on interview questions and interview tips from THE MOST INFORMATIONAL SITE.... right here on AtoZ!

:thanks:Thank you to everyone on this site!!

    YEAH!!!!

I can FEEL your excitement. (and yes, the connection DOES help. I know I got at least one of my interviews from my college study-partner who worked within a district.)

Study Study Study! I am hoping real hard to see your name on the newly hired list!!

Thanks again! I am getting more confident by reading and studying interview questions on here. Now the challenge is to not sound too confident in answering the interview questions. I've decided to just be myself. I love teaching and I am going to do my best to convey that to the interview team.

If you sound confident, it shows and generally impresses the interviewers! I know this from experience as an interviewer ;) Good luck once again!

    It's tomorrow at 12:30!

    EEeek!

I feel very prepared... and if it wasn't for the guy @ Office Max getting his greasy inky fingers on my portfolio pages... I would be just dandy right now.

I'm bringing my gigantic portfolio in my bag with me to the interview (created five years ago and updated a bit), but I wanted something simpler and more recent to give to the interviewers so I compiled a "notebook" style portfolio with my my cover letter, resume, references, three recent letters of recommendation, classroom layout, sample daily schedule, sample back to school newsletter, transcripts, business card, and personal brochure. It's all bound together with a clear cover and backing. (Not the silly comb binds-- an actual spiral bind.)

I also have this same info in a nice presentation folder just in case they want something not all bound together as backup.

But.... as I said before... the guys at Office Max goofed up some pages so I had to run back home, reprint, and bring it back.

Good News: They bound it for free! :woot:

Thanks to everyone for the "good lucks" and good vibes!

If it's meant to be then the job is already mine.:D:)

Wowzers... that interview was tough, but I feel I did very well.

There was ONE question that caught me off guard... and I can't even remember how it was worded. The principal used a word (which I have never heard before:dizzy:) ... and I THINK it meant... "describe a teacher you admire/want to model after."
I wish I could think of the word. I feel so dumb for seriously having not the slightest clue as to what it meant. Hmmm... I answered it well if that's what he was asking. haha

Another question I wasn't ready for...

"Name one famous teacher you admire and why."

I went with Christa McAullife (sp) because of her quote, "I touch the future. I teach." I had fun with that question, actually.

I am glad it's over, but now it's the waiting game. If it's meant to be, then it'll happen. I just keep telling myself that. If it's not me who is chosen, I am SOOOO ready for another interview, that's for sure!

I have already mailed a personalized Thank You note (made at Vistaprint.com) ... I might have to wait to hear anything until next FRIDAY!

    Thanks again everyone!:D

    Bad News...

The district hired one of their subs. OF COURSE! I was a mess yesterday after getting the call.

"The decision was really tough and you interviewed so well. We went with one of the teachers who subs regularly in the building."

    Gee whiz.

I guess it just prepared me for my next interview. Hopefully it doesn't take another TWO YEARS just to get one. :dizzy:

Something better must be just around the corner...:thumb:

Ugh...that response hurts sometimes even more because you know you were so close. But someone noticed you and knows you are an awesome candidate! Hopefully something else could open up here...or maybe the P will share with another P about you. Don't lose hope...keep your chin up. GL!

I'm sorry you didn't get the job, but at least you got some valuable interview experience at the beginning of hiring season. Good luck!

    I'm so sorry!

Sometimes one interview leads to another. I interviewed for an assisting position last year. I did not get it, but I really think that interview set me up for a shot at a long term sub. interview, which I did get. Not my first choice, but, really, it has worked out more than o.k.. I think just the fact that they called you says something of your great interview. Hang in there!

Maybe that principal would share your name with others, happens all the time in our district.

    Ah, I'm so sorry.

But remember: the hiring season is just getting started. Now you have a principal who KNOWS that you interviewed well (and had the decency to tell you that the job went to someone else instead of keeping you hanging.) There's always the chance that something else in his building will open up, and you'll be one of the prime contenders.

    Hang in there!

That happens a lot. Teach.smith, if a position comes up elsewhere in the district, you could ask your principal to put in a good word for you. That could be your ticket to more interviews!
