I'm teaching a 2 hour a week arts and crafts class for students entering Kindergarten to entering 3rd this summer and it is driving me crazy. The projects that I have planned have not worked well. We made the classic macaroni picture frames and covered cans with masking tape and paint to make pencil holders...you would have thought I was asking them to copy a page from the encyclopedia or some other similar torture. The projects that have worked well are shrinky dinks and making a spinning top from an old cd. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have 5 more classes.
Tye Dye or painting a shirt Kaleidoscope or telescope Musical instrument: coffee can drum or shaker Making a pet rock Making a paper boat and having boat races Marble painting Making homemade ice cream Bubble print art Wind chime
Paint small clay plant pots Origami Make lanyards from plastic twine Cut a butterfly pattern from construction paper; cut out the inside of the wings (the construction paper) and replace it with tissue paper Face painting Pinatas from papier-mache Modge podge (is that the right name?)
You may even try setting up a few crafts and letting the students choose which one they want to make. They may like the choice a little bit more.
No problem! It might also help with the grade level differences. You could offer something with less fine motor for the K and something a little more complex for the 3rd graders.
