For the 100th day of school I am teaching a Social Studies lesson of life 100 years ago. Does anyone have any book ideas that would be suitable for 2nd grade?

I was always a big fan of The Guinness book of World Records when I was in 2nd grade. Reading biographies of living centurions might be interesting and open their minds up to studying records.
Wikipedia has the lists of the oldest people still living.

1909 is written MCMIX. Wouldn't MC Mix make a great rap star name?

The cost of a stamp was 2 cents.

The NAACP was founded in 1909.

Shine On Harvest Moon was written in 1909. Songs that were popular in 1909 (not all written in 1909) included Anchors Aweigh, Bill Bailey, Won't You Please Come Home, By the Light of the Silvery Moon, Give My Regards to Broadway, Glow Worm, Meet Me in St. Louis, and Take Me Out to the Ball Game.

Robert Peary and Mathew Hensen reached the North Pole in 1909.

The New York Times published its first movie review ever.

The first event ever is held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Actor Hugh Beaumont was born. (Yep, he was the dad on Leave it to Beaver)

Burl Ives was also born. (Kids will know him as the singer on Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer)

The first pro baseball game was played using lights.

Arabian Nights was first published in 1909.

But here's your focal point --------------------- the first Lincoln head pennies were minted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
