I've been with the organization for 13 months and currently work there full-time this summer. I will continue to work this job on Saturdays during the school year. I have already had to take off 4 of the last 5 days of the summer portion of this job to start new teacher orientation 2.5 weeks from now. The dept. chair wants to give me a tour today or tomorrow. I asked her could I speak with my supervisor and get back to her. I know for sure Mon-Thurs will not work given the nature of my job. However, I spend most of Fridays sitting at my desk working. Do you think my job will let me rearrange those hours so I can take the tour on Friday? Or do you think I should tell my dept. chair I can't and must wait until orientation? Thanks!!!!!!
How could anyone possibly answer this for you? We don't know the personnel dynamics. Are they easy going about time off? Can't you take the tour during hours you arent working?
One is a part time job, the other is the start of your career. What matters most is that teaching job. Try, as much as possible, to be accomdating. But what matters most is anything that will help you ease (??) into a new work enviornment and will make that first year teaching a bit less stressful.
I work during the school's building hours =( They're fairly easy going about time off BUT I've put in to take off 4 days.
Can you stay late on Friday if you take off? I have a part-time job myself and I try not to let my teaching job overshadow it since the parttime job is also important to me, and I have students there who depend on me too. So while the new job is important, I'd not want to burn bridges at the p-t since you are staying. In my case, I NEED that extra $600/month. Maybe you can explain all this to your supervisor and see what they suggest.
Can you work a few Saturdays to make up for the time you're missing this summer? Perhaps switch with someone who would like a few Saturdays off??
If it is your only opportunity to see the school before starting figure out a way to work it out. I have started at schools twice where I never got a tour of the building. It can be frustrating. Once the school year starts everyone is very busy and often will not even think of giving tours.
