I want to do a series on my blog this summer giving specific examples of incorporating higher level activities with read-alouds.

What are some titles that you can practically recite by heart-you use them year after year?

"Come inside, Mr. Bird, said the mouse, I'll show what there is, in a People House. A people house has things like chairs, things like roller skates and stairs...."

That was the first thing that popped into my head. I'm not sure if it's exactly right, but I can recite huge chunks of "In a People House". I can also still recite large chunks of quite a number of Dr. Seuss books.

Shel Silverstien's poetry is the other author that comes to mind.

"Old black flys been buzzing around, buzzing around, buzzing around. Old black flys been buzzing around and he's had a busy, bad day." Old Black Fly - Aylesworth

"The night Max wore his wolf suit...." Where the Wild Things Are - Mayer

Those two stick in my head but there are more.

Thank you very much for the inspiration! :)

Where the Wild Things Are was the 1st one I did-that's one I know by heart myself! I love when October rolls around so we can do it in our monster unit.

Of course, Dr. Suess! :thumb:I love Shel Silverstein too-maybe even the Giving Tree, hmmm.

"Sing out clear and strong and the world will cry tears of joy"

Yes... Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon - I love to read it at the beginning of the year. We take quotes from the book and post them around the room for the remainder of the year.

Thanks for this suggestion -- I'd forgotten about Demi, and this looks like a good book to try with kids!
