I am at a new school this year and have an absolutely huge classroom. I have all of my centers set up, but I have 1 extra shelf and no idea what to do with it.

    The centers I have are:
    *Dramatic Play
    *Puzzles
    *Fine Motor
    *Blocks
    *Writing
    *Art
    *Library
    *Math
    *Science
    *Sensory
    *Computer

The remaining shelf faces my large group carpet, so whatever materials are on it will be worked with in the floor. I teach special education preschool and have thought about creating some type of "social skills" center, since many of my students need to have structured social activities and practice interacting with peers, but i'm not tied to the idea.

    Any ideas?

Post office center? Have mail with the kids' names on it and boxes to match up with.

    House keeping

    Music

Listening Center with books on tape/CD

    Puppets

    Cars

Pocket Chart (whatever topic you want to reinforce there)

Music or Cars and Trucks and Things that Go, seasonal with different items relating to the season that you are in.

A rotating center with items that change according to the theme? What about an estimation station? Please touch? Take apart center?

I would LOVE an extra shelf in my class!! I barely have enough as it is!

Music center is required in our state, but if its not in yours I would do the seasonal/rotating center like a previous poster mentioned!

Thanks everyone! I had planned on doing the idea of the rotating theme center, but yesterday our school purchased new rugs for all the classrooms and my new rug was gigantic, so i had to get rid of my 1 extra shelf :(

Just for the record, I'd like to hear what people do to create a "Music Center" besides just putting percussion instruments out. I'm excited for new ideas!
