Friends, I recently found out that my school has had declining enrollment for next school year. During kindergarten "Round-Up" only 50 kindergarteners were registered. Normally, we have at least 75-100 kindergarteners each school year. Anyway, we're moving a kindergarten teacher to another grade level because we don't need her in kindergarten next year. Do you see where I'm going with this??? :help: Well, even though I've been at my school for 5 years, I am going to be moved. I am nervous, angry, speechless, and my heart is beating 1000 times per minute. Anyway, human resources contacted me and said that they will be calling me (within the next two weeks) to let me know what jobs are available. I will be able to choose one of the available jobs. Yes, I am thankful that I will have a job--truly, truly thankful. This whole situation caught me (and my principal) completely off guard. Thank you for reading this far. I will keep you all posted regarding what position I choose (from the list of "left overs"). Hopefully, human resources will call me soon so I can find out where I'll be next year. P.S. I am guaranteed to find out before the last day of school (June 4th). I guess I should start packing!!!
Oh, boy! What are you certified for? Can they move you anywhere K-8? Maybe this will be a good move with lots of new experiences.
I am certified K-8. The good thing is that they don't choose my position...I do. I am hoping that the list of available jobs has something in elementary! I am hoping for the best.
What if you were forced to choose 8th grade math cause that's all that was left? What a crazy leap from 2nd grade! I'm so scared that will happen to me. I am placed 3rd-5th grade at my school, so I will most likely get one of those, but nothing's guaranteed. However it might be interesting! Scary...but interesting.
That's exactly what I'm wondering. There's no telling how many parents couldn't go to the round up or didn't know about it. Around here, round up is not an accurate indicator of kinder enrollment. There's still hope!
I'll be hoping for the best for you! My advice is to choose quickly from the list! In our district, if you are displaced you get a list of schools to choose from but if you wait too long your first choice is gone. Good luck!
Well, I guess it's better knowing now then waiting til the beginning of the year and finding out that they have to move someone. That has happened many times here. I hope you get what you want.
That's idiotic to move two people, when they could just move the kindergarten teacher to a new position. Did I mention it's idiotic?
Well, they're giving her my 2nd grade position because she has 13 more years of seniority than I do. I keep telling myself that it's better to be "displaced' than to not have a job at all--especially the way things are here in California. I couldn't sleep last night!
I am being moved too. Not for enrollment but just because. I hate the thought of packing my room - so much stuff! And learning a totally new grade level. I am glad I have a job but I it is still very stressful to change grade levels.
Good luck with the move. I too am in the great state of CA; I am not sure where you are, but where I am things are beyond bleak. I have a job - not the one I want - but I will hanging on to it for dear life and doing so with a smile. Sending positive vibes for a good move for you.
YTG, you have an amazing attitude all the time. Being pulled out of our comfort zones is hard but teaches us so much. Keep your positive spirit and you will do just great.....you never know, it might even end up a blessing.
At least you will have the summer to plan. Look at it as a new adventure. You might find that you like the new grade level just as much as the one you taught before. Good Luck!
That happens every year here, too! This year they have promised to wait until the beginning of September (when a lot of parents THINK school starts) to make a decision about keeping a K class open. (Which in this case is MY class!) So, wondering here, too about where I will be..
I know it's a bummer, but just roll with it. Don't wait too long to decide where to go once you see the list, particularly since you want an elementary job and not middle school.
Big picture: in a horrendous economy, with declining enrollment, you still have a job. Better yet, you get to choose which job. From limited options, sure, but you still get a choice. And who knows? You may look back and realize that this was the move of your career. At the very least, it will make you a better teacher-- one well versed in more than one level. Will it be easy? Probably not. But will it benefit you in the long run? Most assuredly. Good luck!
Hopefully the move won't be too monumental. Even one grade level can be tough. If you do get moved way up (5th or 6th or above) there are a lot of teachers here who would be more than willing to help you in any way possible. Keep us informed.
