I'm working with my principal on the schedule for next school year. We are combining the K-2 and 3-5 into one building so we are running into some challenges with fitting in all of our recess time (1 hour total) for all grade levels. I know most schools don't have this much recess time... so...PLEASE HELP... How many recesses do you have and for how long? Do your younger students and older students have the same amount of recess time each day? Thank you in advance!
My school doesn't have much recess time at all. We have two 10 minute recesses a day, so only 20 minutes a day. Two grade levels share each recess and there are 4 different areas that the kids can go for recess (my school is really big). All grade levels have the same amount of time for recess.
I want an hour of recess total!! All grades (K-5) have a 20 minute AM recess and a 35 minute lunch, which includes eating and probably 10 minutes of recess. Next year lunch is going to 45 minutes, so it'll be about 20 minutes of playing. Recesses/lunches are K/1, 2/3, and 4/5. Like FarFromHome, my school is really big. So...40 minutes total I guess next year, but 30 right now.
30 minutes. An hour is a lot. Is it divided up, or one really long recess? I'll admit- when we get a great day in between a bunch of crappy ones, we will stay out an hour. But everyday?!
In the state I work in the amount of time a 4-5th needs to be in the classroom is higher than 1-3. So our first, second and third graders get a morning recess of 15 minutes, 20 minutes recess time at lunch, and ten minutes in the last hour of the day. The fourth and fifth skip the last ten minute recess. Kindergartens get 20 minutes recess time at lunch, and a longer morning recess and then go home early.
All of our students (close to 750 at my school from Junior Kindergarten to grade 8) have recess at the same time--30 minutes mid-morning and then 40 minutes after eating lunch.
Our kids have 15 mins a day (don't even get me started!) and PE 2 days out of each 6 day cycle (45 mins each). Still not enough if you ask me.
K-2 students go to recess from 10:20-10:40. 3-5 students have recess from 10:45-11:05. In the afternoon, lunch is 50 minutes long and includes 20 minutes of eating and 30 minutes of recess.
15 minutes in the morning (we take our own class out in the morning so if it is a nice day out we may accidently stay out for longer) and 30 minutes after lunch. We have 30 minutes of PE every day also.
All our students, grades 1-5, have 45 min for lunch and recess. They eat for 20-25 min and then go outside. First lunch is at 10:55 and I think last lunch is at 1:00. The day ends at 3:10. But our 25 min for recess is of course nowhere near the 60 min you're hoping to fit in.
We have 15 minutes of either an AM/PM recess, and 15 minutes for lunch recess. They have PE twice in a 6 day rotation.
When I was a full day kinder teacher, our kids got 20 minutes in the morning, 1 hour lunch (so around 40 minutes for recess) and then another 10 minutes (or 20, it's been a few years) in the afternoon. I JUST now read an article about recess in schools and how many schools don't have enough of them. I'm not a teacher anymore, but our company has us do 2 ten minute recess breaks a day. We even have a recess room. They get it.
