My name is Sabrina and Hurricane Katrina destroyed my Montessori school in New Orleans, we had 10 feet of water in the building. If any one knows of anyway that i can get help for my Montessori school to get materials to open up on September 1,2006 please let me know. You can get me back here or at my email address brina618@msn.com, or brina618@yahoo.com. Thank You, Sabrina
HI Sabrina, I'm so sorry to hear of your terrible losses. Can you be more specific as to what you need? Here are some resources to try: http://hurricanehelpforschools.gov/ http://www.geocities.com/ourhive/teachershelpingteachers http://ncea.catholic.org/phpbb/index.php Also, what I would suggest is this: Google "Montessori schools" and send your e-mail to each of them. Ask them to "adopt" your school for a year or two until you're back on your feet. Be fairly specific in your request: let them know whether you're looking for backpacks, boards, textbooks, etc. Also, consider contacting Boy and Girl Scout troops. The boys do the EAgle Scout award; for the girls it's the Gold Award. They can't just do fundraising, but they can do "Operation Backpack" type projects, replace classroom libraries-- that sort of thing. Good luck! Let us hear from you! Alice
I think it is a good idea to contact M schools in the US, you could use the NAMTA resource to get contact information. http://montessori-namta.org Also, Old Brooklyn M school has a few materials available, contact them to get a list. http://www.greatschools.net/cgi-bin/oh/pqview/12 What materials are you looking for?
Our Montessori school may be doing an event this spring to raise $ for our school and another in need. Could you provide more info on your school please? Thanks!

Sabrina, If you could just send me a short description of the history of your school (if you have one handy), and the photos when you get a chance, I will bring it to our next meeting. We have a fundraiser for our school every year and when the theme of Mardi Gras was suggested this year we all agreed the only way we would feel good about that theme would be if we could give something to a Montessori school in New Orleans affected by the hurricane. I don't know how much we will be able to raise, but it sounds like every bit will help! And perhaps we could get the kids involved as well... Sarah
Established in 1965 New Orleans Montessori School is now in it's 41st year of giving children a wonderful learning experience. NOMS welcomes children ages 2 1/2 years old and potty trained to 6 years old. A Montessori environment is designed to help children focus, control small and large motor skills, take initiative, be self-motivated and independent and advance in all academic areas. We are able to reach such accomplishments with certified Montessori teachers, well-trained assisstants, and real Montessori equipment in a "hands on" environment. Children love it because everything is on their level and they are given the tools to learn new skills. Parents love it because their children are healthy, happy, well cared for, and learning concepts and ideas that they never thought were possible at such a young age. Best of all they learn at their own pace and ability. Pre Katrina we had 55 children, and four teachers. We had lots of activities going on in the school, such as a White Linen Night, Grandparents Tea, Birthday celebrations, and a school picinic. We also had themed summer camps every year. I will forward you the pictures of the school after the hurricane as soon as i send you this email. Thanks, Sabrina
Materials Hello Sabrina, I'm writing to you from Taddle Creek Montessori School in Toronto, Canada. We have lots of materials we no longer need that are in decent shape. We also have lots of baskets, trays, objects for polishing, etc... What do you need & where can I ship it? Take care, -liz

Hi Sabrina. I'll get stuff organized ASAP. Do you have any photos of your school or can you share any info. with me that I can speak to the children about? Our Upper Elementary class is going to help me to organize & pack up the materials. Thanks, -liz
getting organized Sabrina, our Upper Elementary students are planning a bake sale to raise money to cover the costs of shipping the materials to you. Are you also in need of office supplies? Does your school have a website we can check out? Thanks, -liz
I am actually in the process of setting up a new weviste for the school The one the we had pre Katrina is no longer active because the company we were going through was local and they didnt come back after the hurricane. But you can go look at what I have started. Just remember its not nearly finished yet. I still have alot of work to do on it. The web address is www.nomsteachers.com. Yes we can also use office supplies. I can send you pictures, but its pictures of the school after the hurricane and a parent emailed them to me so our writings back and forth to each other will be there too. Im still in the process of looking for pictures of the school inside and out before the hurricane. Thanks So Much, Sabrina
Can you please send me your email address so that I can send you the pictures. my email is my name here with yahoo behind it Sabrina
