    Help!

My electric pencil sharper, that I paid $50 for at Staples 2 years ago, is croaking. It's a Staples brand, heavy use.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a new one? I noticed Staples in our area doesn't have the same one, but they have a front sharpener and a top sharpener that are both heavy use.

(PS...I was given a hand crank that drives me batty and is put away for emergency purposes. It takes too long and kids love it too much.)

    Any suggestions?

I only get mine through Scholastic with my points. I refuse to actually pay for them. Right now I have two Stanley Bostitch sharpeners for the kids to use. I had one other that made it about 8 months. One of the two is on its way out after about 8 months as well.

I also got the Quiet Sharp Glow sharpener. I don't let the kids use this one because it automatically shuts off when the pencil is sharpened but the pencil has to be wiggled out of it and I'm afraid the kids won't be gentle enough with it. The blade on this one is supposed to be replaceable. I'm not thrilled with it, it makes the points so sharp that it sharpens away the pencils too quickly. But it will hopefully last for some time since the blade is replaceable. It's also supposed to be better with colored pencils.

I know I'm lazy when I feel like I'm allergic to hand crank pencil sharperners with as many pencils as I have to sharpen throughout the year. And, no, I don't let my little darlings near any of my sharpeners after I had one little lovely break my $45 the first week I had it.

Thanks for the suggestion, though. I'll consider this one.

Okay, so this one might help make my inner princess feel better...because hand cranking is not my thing. I already love it and I'm keeping it on my list.

I didn't know Scholastic sold sharpeners!

I'm skipping right over to find out if I have enough points to get one!

    Thanks so much!

I promise it is the best. I had two that costed over $55 each. Two or three turns is all you need to sharpen a pencil with this one.

I have this one in my room. It replaced a much more expensive one from Office Depot. Amazon was so kind to remind me that I bought it in October. It's still going strong. I'm going to order another, just so I have two in the room, but it's great. My Payload Specialist sharpens a cup of pencils for their table every morning. I have 3 classes, so it gets used. I will say, though, I HATE that the reservoir is so tiny. I just keep a trashcan by it and they know to empty it after sharpening for their table.

You *almost* have me convinced...at the two or three turns. :)

I  this...maybe it's the price AND it says HEAVY-Duty.

Hmm....Plus Amazon has FREE shipping. And we all know that's the goal for using Amazon.

I love that this thread exists. I have a pencil sharpener I got in September and it is already dying. It seems like somehow my classroom has become the place for all students to pop in when they need to sharpen a pencil.

I put the amazon one on my classroom amazon wishlist in hopes that a thoughtful parent might pick it up for me this summer. :)

I bought two electric sharpeners from Staples back in the fall and I believe I got them for $10. I have two others that have been with me for several years. The system I've come up with has worked out this year. Each table of 6 has a designated pencil sharpener and I have not had problems with any of them wearing out so far. It's great considering I have 70 students.

Really? I have had mine for 3 years and it's still going strong! In fact, I bought another one when I found out how inexpensive it is and how much I loved it, but haven't had to use the other one yet! I thought it had played out once but a colleague pointed out that you have to make sure the compartment where the pencil shavings collect must be completely closed in order for it to work- I was tilting the machine (barely) and it wouldn't work

I am the only one who uses my sharpener, but I sharpen about 30 pencils a couple times every day.
