I want to apply to sub in a district in my dream town and I just read on their website that they are only accepting applications from student teachers who are doing their assignment in their district. What the heck! Are they serious!!?? Do they just have too many subs working for their district? I just emailed them, but I'm just wondering if this is common. Where I live right now, there is always a need for subs, and there is a CSU nearby full of graduating teachers. So, I really don't see what is up. BLEH. ANOTHER obstacle in my life. :(

I've never heard this before. Could it be that this is something new and they are thinking that pink slipped teachers will turn to subbing?

The last time I heard of something like this, Peachy, it was that state law allows anyone with CBEST to be a short-term substitute but that the district in question chose to demand either possession of a full credential or enrollment in a teacher preparation program.

You might doublecheck with the district itself to see exactly what's going on.

Wow, I've never heard of that. We NEVER have enough subs. We are so desperate we let subs keep subbing even after they've performed pretty terribly.

Over here, the district promises to hire a specific amount of student teachers each year from the university that provides them with student teachers, but we can't sub here unless you have a B Ed.

We don't have enough either. I was out sick today with a my back and didn't have a sub to cover any of my classes. We have had a sub flirting with construction workers working in the street across from our building. She made a sign and hung it in the window "I'm hor**, give me a call 235 - 5555"

She worked in our building last week

Yep, sounds like some of the ones we've had. Every day an all-call goes out to the teachers asking us to cover a class on our preps.

My kids actually asked me not to be sick anymore this year because they are scared of one of the subs...lol

Okay we need to grow up now (coming from a newbie 22 year old teacher) :D

    (1) OMG I can't believe she actually did that!?!?

    (2) I've never heard of only student teachers in the area being able to sub. o_O In my area you just have to send a letter to the dept of edu superintendent of the district and have a background check, boom you'll be placed.

I would still give your info and try it out--- maybe if they needs subs they won't turn you down, but you won't ever know unless you try.

I wanted to sub during these few months that I've been out of college and looking for a job. Now that I have a job for Sept., I don't want to do anything so I can rest and prepare myself :p

WTH?!?!?! ok.....I'm having a brain fart. What does hor** mean?

I take this personally. I am serious about doing a good job, and it's stuff like this that makes us all (subs) loose integrity. What a loser.

OK, now to the OP...I've never heard of such a thing. How the heck are they going to cover all of the absences??? Possibly the school district has building subs who work daily, but still, I can't imagine they'd have enough to fill all the slots.
