My sister is planning to go witht her husband and 3 kids in August. They're staying in Jackson Hole, and planning a day trip to Yellowstone.

She's not quite sure where to start beyond that.

Should she go by bus to Yellowstone or rent a car? How long a layover in Salt Lake is reasonable? What else do you suggest?

I've planned the last 2 of her vacations (To Disney, of course!!) so now she's looking for help on this. Her husband just wants to be told where and when to show up, so it's all up to her.

    Anyone?

Alice, my family went when I was a teen. We did a HUGE crosscountry road trip, so I have no real advice. But tell your sister to have a fabulous time! Both Yellowstone and Jackson Hole were a lot of fun!

We've gone to Yellowstone many times....... but always in our RV (motor home). (We normally stay in the town of West Yellowstone.)

Yellowstone is really a BIG park with many things to do. If my time was limited I would concentrate on the area with the most geothermal features...:)

We are also planning a trip out to Yellowstone this summer. Anyone know of a message board about Yellowstone. I can't seem to find one. I often go to Cruise Critic when I plan my cruises but can't find a similar one for Yellowstone.

Oh, Emma, if you find one, could you let me know?

She's staying at the Snake River Lodge (la di da!!! It looks just gorgeous on the website. My sister, as you'll realize when you look at the site, is in a better financial place than we are :) )

Yellowstone is very crowded in August. If you don't want to deal with traffic there are probably tours out of Jackson. It's a 4to 5 hour drive from SLC. You can go up I-15 through Idaho if you don't want a lot of monutain driving. It goes into West Yellowstone and then the Park. Then you have to go thru the park to get to Jackson. Or you can drive I-80 and through the little towns on the Utah- Wyo. border. that drops you in Jackson. there's some mountain driving that route. Many people don' like the canyon drive from SLC to Park City.
If she has time Deer Valley resort in Park City ,U tah is a very nice place to visit. Cool and quiet. She may want to stay in the park also. The Tetons have VERY nice lodging. Old Faithful lodge is always fun to stay in.

The only things about her trip that are set are the dates and the resort.

Everything else is up for grabs.

    Oh, good, I'll tell her.

Her last 2 vacations at Disney were easy. I did all the groundwork, as part of my "therapy."
