For those of you that teach a half-day program, can you share your daily schedule.
Nov 17, 2010
Keeping in mind that my class is mixed age, from 2 1/2 through 6 years old...
12:45-1:45: Free Play at centers
1:25-1:30: Clean up, to music
1:30-1:50: Circle time (younger students leave in the middle to do a quiet activity with the assistant)
1:50-3:00: Group Activities-we divide into our Pink Group (Pre-k) and our Purple Group (K) for activities connected to the lesson at circle time. After the activities are complete, each group has different play centers open
3:00-3:15-Clean up, optional Prayer for the Sick Club (the children decide if they want to come. Those who participate get a small treat, usually 1/6th of a licorice or a jelly bean)
3:15-3:25: Story, some children are dismissed
3:25-3:45: Music and Movement
3:45-4:00: Pack up and dismissal
I have half-day AM's, and am adding PM's after winter break. My AM is all special needs, turning 3 and aging out of Early INtervention. My PM will be mixed 3's and 4's, with about half eligible for K next year. It's considered an "At risk" class, 3-4 kids are getting speech but no IEPs at this point beyond that.
Here's my AM schedule:
8:30: arrive, backpacks, table activities (coloring, manipulatives, puzzles, etc)
8:45: music and movement
9:00 stations (small group or inidividual work time)
9:30 circle time (greeting, calendar, weather, story, etc)
9:45 group activity
10:15 or whenever snack is finished: Free choice centers
My afternoon schedule is similar. My times are flexible, but the order rarely changes. I have speech, OT, and PT that come into the classroom, and we leave for gym and library... so, for instance, i don't do circle on Wednesdays because that's gym time. Sometimes we'll do a whole-group speech activity during stations, and then we may leave out the group activity later... scoot snack up and that gives us extra play time
So the basic order is pretty consistent, with extra things added in as needed.
I have both morning and afternoon classes but they both look the same. My schedule is fairly flexible depending on what the vibe in the classroom is like that day.
9:00-9:30: Free choice, teacher directed table activities
9:30-10:00: Circle time
10:00-10:30ish: Group activities(art,writing,math)
10:30-10:45: Bathroom break, wash hands
11:10-11:25: gross motor(playground or gym)
11:25-11:30 pack up and pass out art. Recap the day while standing in line to be dismissed.

Morahme, what a nice idea, the "sick club".
Why the group restroom breaks? I'm guessing the restroom is NOT near or in the classroom?

I have group restroom breaks because I have a few who won't go and will have an accident if I don't prompt them. The ones who don't have to pee just wash hands to get ready for lunch and/or to keep germs down. I usually have a story tape on for those who are in and out quickly. They can lie on the circle carpet and listen while the others finish up. I hope to move away from group potty times, but so far whenever I dabble with that someone has an accident.
