A few months ago, I chopped my hair off. I was ready for a change, and my hair had become unhealthy looking and so I did it. I like it, it generally looks nice, but I really really miss the length. I got a wild "hair" :lol: and started to consider extensions. But I have no idea if this is even feasible. I have a bob hair cut, dark brown, caucasian hair (does that matter?) Are they really expensive? Do they last? Do they look real, if I am not a celebrity who can pay celebrity prices? Will I regret it? Does it ruin your hair?
I have extensions and had them for 7 years. There are different ways to do it: -sew in: no good, unless you're African American. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise coz you'll end up with rows of bumps on your head and look silly. - fusion: this is glue. I used it for years, and it was ok, but it is damaging to the hair. They say it's not, it's actually damaging when you take it out because you lose more hair. The upside it will never just fall out. - microbeads: I've been suing this for 4 years and I'm happy with it. You have to find the exact color to match your hair, and make sure it's really put on tight. It's doesn't damage hair. hair You need excellent quality hair, which is Remy. It means the cuticles are facing the same way. If it's not Remy, that means the hair has been mixed up, and I guarantee you your hair will be a tangled mess after 2 weeks. I had that happen once accidentally. You can reuse the same hair at least twice, but not as long as they say, not for 6-12 months. Salons charge an arm and a leg. It's often $1000-$1500. This might sound cheap, but if you look on Craigslist there are plenty of hairdressers do this at home, charging half the price (or even less, mine charges $150-200 to put them in, plus the hair, but in the past I bought my own hair). These girls know what they're doing, but they don't have to pay for overhead. Of course you gotta talk to them and see pictures of their work. But I could do extensions myself, it's not that hard. Actually I take them out and put them in on the sides, I even do some n the back. They do look real if it's done right, and the do last. it does ruin your hair a bit though.
$1500??? Ok, my expectations were waaaaay lower than that. I guess you get what you pay for, but I think I'll wait out the grow out!
Well, like I said you can find people to do for cheaper. I had 2 different girls doing my hair for the past 7 years, much cheaper, but the quality was always great. You can always wait to have it grow out of course. My hair doesn't grow. It just doesn't go past shoulder, and it started to thin. My avatar is me, my hair actually goes down my back. I love it. I'm so used to it, if I ever stopped getting extensions, I feel that I would need to go super short, otherwise I'd feel weird.
My mom buys extensions from Sally's and sews clips or combs onto them. I think real human hair runs around $100 for each package and the synthetic is much cheaper.
Oh man, you're really making me consider it! My hair grows really slowly. I can grow it out but it takes 2-3 years, and I don't like the quality. I would really like to do it as a surprise for my hubby. He's not that picky about hair, but I know he loved my longer hair and was secretly disappointed when I cut it. :lol:
Ok, I found a place nearby that does them! You have to go in for a consultation, then you pay for the hair and they order it, then it is $89 per hour. Does that sound normal?
Depends how many hours they take putting them in. Maybe check a few places and get a median price? And always check online reviews. I've found that very helpful when looking for any service in health and beauty. When it's bad, people will talk.
Yes, check a few places. I would never pay someone per hour, it leaves a loophole for how much they will charge you. A hairdresser obviously knows how long it takes, they shold charge for the 'project'. Please do not get synthetic hair, ever. It doesn't look real, you can barely wash it, and can't do anything to it with heat. Not worth it. I personally don't like Sally's their products are way overpriced and the workers usually don't know about extensions. One time I bought the glue for the hair, only to find out that in the heat it slightly melted and made my hair a big mess as well as some of the extensions were slipping out. Went back to Sally's, they said "oh, you're not supposed to wash your hair, because the glue will come apart if you use hair conditioner". Seriously?? Sally's is great, but not for extensions.
I have extensions. I have had them for 3 or 4 years. When I first got them they were brads and beads, They stayed in ok but when they would come out they would take my hair with it. Now I have them fused in. They don't come out as easy. Most of them time when they do come out it's because the glue has softened. I can usually work them out without yanking my own hair out. I would make sure you have a good quality hair to begin with. I had a set for a while that was AWFUL! Couldn't wait for them be old and replace them. Now we replace them about twice a year or less. My hairdresser and I are friends so she doesn't charge me to have them put back in and she only charges me for the hair when we do change them out. I know she charges others a pretty penny for theirs.
You can also buy clip-in extensions. They are quite a bit less than the permanent ones if you shop around onlinr because there is no salon cost. That way you can try them out and see what you think. Plus you can go short one day and long the next!
A friend had the ones that are taped in and they looked so awful. Whenever she would bend down or be outside in the wind, her hair would blow and you could see the tape!
I had extensions put in last year. Mine was the glue in and when it was time to take them out my real hair looked more awful than it did before putting the extensions in!! I've been tempted to try the microbeads, but I'm not sure if I want to risk it again or not. I do have the clip in extensions that I put in every once in awhile for something different.
Taped in? :lol::lol: WHAT??? :lol::lol: I've seen a lot of weaves over the years but I have never seen one taped in. Is it like Scotch or masking tape? Most of my female students have sew-ins (glue-ins have gone out of favor, I guess) and they prefer Remy or Brazilian hair but they complain that this hair is expensive. They often use cheap hair that looks super shiny (and often super cheap). I think with them, the problem is that their real hair and the weave often does not blend well together.
Well, it looked like little pieces of tape, maybe it was the tab that was glued? I don't know, but it was not good!
There is a new technique which is tape in.The girl that does my hair always know about the latest techniques and even tricks so she showed them. It's super thin tape, you take a small part of your hair (about 2-3 inches wide, but very thin part) and tape it on one side and then cover it with the hair on the other side and it all sticks together. It looks very natural if you don't move, but you can't put your hair in a ponytail, can't braid it and I assume if it's windy, the hair will move unnaturally. I like my hair to look and act as real as possible so I was never interested in it.
